Colorado Dark Arts Festival - Various Artists A festival in Denver, Colorado which happened May 25th of this year, and offers up a grab bag of musical styles and artists. The diversity is the attraction here as different bands have varying music style and influences. A virtual who's who of all music dark in the Denver area. Some of the tunes will bring you back to the 80s synth pop, while others will transport you to the new musical horizon mixing everything from experimental, trance and EMO to bring you the full meal deal. The 2 disc set features a grand exploration of the dark side, while becoming almost mainstream in some of the MUSIC anyway, the lyrics are enough at times to make the weaker minded miss the turn. A must have for all the fans of the genre as it explores the best of the indies from The Red Church, Indigo Reaction, Caustic Soul, Porcelain Dolls, Dark Orchid, Deviant, Erotic and many others. The festival took place in two separate locations, The Onyx, and Rock Island and each of the two discs represent the music showcased at each venue. The end result is a CD that shows the diversity of the acts which played. At times dangling over the edge between artistry and murkiness. A good mix that serves up the appetizers, and the main course simultaneously. Music that expands its roots and forces you to give into your deep dark side, and inhibitions. A worthwhile recording that plants Denver's musical roots deep into the chasms of the soul.
Elan - The Deluge of Soundtrack and other Voices..... So I was sitting in a dark room, trying to escape for a while and take a break, was I able to, absolutely not! The new CD from Elan seemed to be calling me from across the room. I answered the call, and slid the CD into my trusty player. While sitting there (still in the dark) a strange sensation came over me as I thought there was something in the room, and why, simply because the experimental electronic music of Elan could just as easily be the haunted soundtrack of any new horror movie. I didn't say that was bad, but the intense feeling that comes with "The Deluge Of Soundtrack......" can send chills down your spine. This is truly a strange CD that encompasses a wide array of noises that alone would be dreadful, however, Elan somehow seem to make it work on some levels. The intriguing sound is not for all by any stretch of the imagination. I can't see myself listening to this CD for extended periods of time, an occasional listen would be all. With that said, there is a market for this investigational approach to music and Elan does pull it off as well as any others I've heard. Listening with your eyes closed can tend you to imagine things, at some points an alien invasion, at others marching soldiers, and a lot of strange things happening in the midst. For an overall thought I will say make sure you take a listen to some of the CD before purchasing to get a picture of what it is you're buying. Intensely different with unusual arrangements that can haunt you. The thought came to me that this would make great background for not only a horror movie, but maybe a late night séance. Feel free to draw your own conclusion.
Erotic - ...a million empty lives Erotic bring new meaning to the term noise as an art form. Bringing together the sounds of feedback, distortion, and Brittish new wave vocals. When put together in this context, it has a definite air of Depeche Mode on speed. The culmination is not for the weak of heart (or ears) but if you like your heavy music mixed with techno back beats, this just may be your cup of tea. Fierce vocals mixed with grinding guitars at a breakneck speed are the order from Erotic. I really thought the distortion was long gone, but now I know different, it has been resurrected between the front and back covers of ...A Million Empty Lives. So what do you get here? A complex mix of 60s guitar work, 70s metal, 80s pop, and 9os Goth that throws Erotic into a new age of musical mayhem that is near impossible to categorize. I think the reason this CD grew on me is because of the barriers it smashes down and the complete disregard of the unwritten law book of music, Erotic don't seem to pay heed to the fact some want to place all music into nice little cubby hole. The feeling of contempt, aggression, and an against the grain attitude make this a good listen as the originality shines through nicely. Erotic are signed with Gestalt records, a small label (for now) that has the courage to let the artists express themselves with experimental techniques. That freedom is of great importance as artists try to find themselves through their music. Standout songs are here: "Problms", "Nothing" and "Ribbons of Mercy" show Erotic in the best light on the disc. A solid CD.

Dark Orchid - Kali Yuga A bizarre trip is in store for all who dare take the journey through the abyss with Denver EMO group Dark Orchid. What we have is a band that may know there are musical boundaries, but don't care. The band believes in their music, and that is all that matters as they believe others will climb on board once they experience the music. Dark Orchid are very happy in their little corner as they embark on the musical journey. They seem to know where they want to be, and even say this is NOT music for the masses. That much is evident as you probably will only hear the music on College radio, or specialty music programs. That may be enough however to catapult the band into the next era of enlightenment. Each track seems to be an island unto itself as the exploration of the soul heads longing to find it's message. The trips will send your mind spinning as the lyrical message seems to run through your ,mind like a stray pinball. Kali Yuga has it's good sides as well as the obscure, however as the band themselves describe their music, it is not as they say for the masses, but I do believe their niche in the stranglehold of music will get them noticed. The musicianship, and ability of the members of Dark Orchid is evident, and the sound is truly that of their own. A journey into the dark side as they seem to be able to bring you along, whether you like the ride or not, the music is darkly hypnotic. The mesmerizing vocals of Tonja have the ability to enthrall the strongest into her grasp and hold you until the end.
