Oval Opus Red Sky recovery

Oval Opus - Red Sky Recovery

Cincinatti, Ohio band Oval Opus fashioned a CD of pure Rock that could be described as a great work that draws from a host of past influences. The slick production, masterful musicianship, and smooth vocals give the band a great sound that doesn't quit. The hooks, mid tempo and upbeat tracks that illustrate the sound for the CD.

Blending soul, rock, and pop into a mind bending success. Oval Opus have a tight sound that deserves a lot of attention. The independently released CD showcases the true faculty of the band. There are a couple weaker songs, but for the most part Red Sky Recovery has a good mix that holds the project together for the most part. A true find in the Indie market that boasts of both style and substance.

Aaron Patrick's vocals are filled with gusto and can really wail where required. The combination of artistry and kinship show how very comfortable the group are with each other. The CD is filled with tunes that would fit just as easily on rock or album oriented radio. The straight forward approach to recording helps carve a place for Oval Opus within the musical realm.

Dan Edmonson pounds the drums, Josh Edmonson has duties of guitar and backing vocals, Patrick Martin delivers the bass and background vocals, while Aaron Patrick is the front man with lead vocals, harmonica and acoustic guitar. As I mentioned before there are a few not so intriguing numbers here, on the other hand, there are some greats that shine above the others, namely "There For Me", "Are You OK?", and the soulful style of  "Wonder" are just three of the notables here.

  The Clumsy Lovers

The Clumsy Lovers - After The Flood

After the last CD, Under the Covers, I said this band was hot, I simply needed to hear more original material. Once again I sit here and am amazed at the musicianship, vocals, and the strong songwriting. A Celtic rock sound with a bit of Country, Bluegrass, and folk thrown in. A truly amazing CD that is above a host of others in the same genre.

A rollicking sound, fresh vocals, along with a band that has amazing talent that shines through their performance on this CD . I strongly recommend the CD that you just cannot stop moving to while listening. Kind of a mixture of Rollins Cross, The Pogues, and Great Big Sea. A virtual party in a CD jewel case, if you want to throw a house or kitchen party, the CD will be bound to spend more time in your CD player than any other.

The Clumsy Lovers have packed a CD filled with fresh sounds while still standing their ground firmly on their roots. There are a few instant classics here, including "Everything's OK", the title song "After The Flood", "Miss You Much, and the classic Newfoundland sounding "Waterbound" lead the pack. The British Columbia 5 piece band have made a sound here that will make you think "This Band must have 10 or more members". The production quality has helped as the band just seems so full, ambient, and energetic here.

Fishkill

Fishkill - A Change of Atmosphere

When you ask someone "Where is the haven for new music ?" I sincerely doubt anyone, without some kind of persuasion, will say "Why Spokane, Washington of course". Chris Nelson ( aka:Fishkill) doesn't care about that, he is just really happy to be making the music he wants to make independently. The major drawback of A Change of Atmosphere is the "inside a huge tin can" hollow sound it has.

The music simply overpowers the vocals, or maybe at times the cymbals are annoying. Other than that, Fishkill has got ability and talent, albeit raw at the present time. The guitar work is good, in fact really good. Chris' vocals are good until he begins to try and harmonize with himself, that seldom works on any level. On the up side, Chris Nelson does do all the work himself between writing, performing and producing the entire project himself.

The problem some artists have when producing their own material is simply they don't have the objective ear behind the board. I think this CD has good potential, Fishkill simply needs to spend a bit more cash (I Know it's hard to come by) and hire a real producer and backup singers, that would make such a drastic improvement here. Maybe even a friend that has a really good musical ear.

If you dissect the songs here (woops, biology class flashback) you can find the talent in each part of the CD, and there is some great talent here. Kind of a new punk wave alternative sound that borrows from a wide variety of influences. The sound here just needs to grow some more, and after the next CD, maybe I'll be able to say "Now That's what I'm looking for!!!". Unfortunately, although talented, Chris Nelson has bestowed upon us a CD that is a bit hard to listen to at times. The heart and passion you can tell are here, but the overall sound of the disk forces me to deduct points from the rating.

Dean Strickland Some Girls to Blame

Dean Strickland - Some Girls To Blame

I have to be honest, when I first got the CD from Dean Strickland, I wasn't quite sure what to make of this Texan, now living in Cali. The reason was first off, the CD Some Girls To Blame actually only seems to blame one girl for all hardships in life, Rachel being that girl. It seemed more of an obsession than an actual love story of a guy getting left by his girl. Almost a Thriller out of Hollywood with stalker and all.

As I said that was my first impression! Then I listened (as I do with all CDs I receive) about 5 or 6 more times. Well, I am here to tell you as sure as I am writing this now, Dean Strickland began to grow on me, and his poignant songwriting struck a chord with me. Strickland has a good vocal style, and a good sense of getting his point across in song. The only downside was a couple of the songs seems like he got a bit stuck for a word, and threw a word in anyway, and that hurts the flow of the album.

Other than the small thing that only rears it's head a few times on the 24 track CD, Dean Strickland has an energetic style that makes the new CD an instant in the for sure KEEPER file. Just a bit more musical maturing, and Strickland will have a great thing happening, and sure to garner attention from the others in the music BIZ! From catchy pop numbers to alt. country, and straight ahead rock, Dean Strickland obviously pulls on all of his musical influences (which include Hank Williams to the Stones) to get his point, and music across.

A definite heart for music shows through the more you listen to the CD, and this kid's got some talent bottled up inside him just aching to be released. I sincerely hope Strickland doesn't have a lot more negativity in his life, but it seems to make the artist in him stronger. I am truly beside myself with the strength, conviction, and talent all pooled inside the artistic soul of DS, he and his own label Never Die Records should continue to do exceptionally.

The Dave Rave Group Everyday Magic

The Dave Rave Group - Everyday Magic

Well, it's time to put on your little newspaper flashback hats, and we'll head on back in time to a, well at the very least, the time in music history was FUN! Dave Rave (AKA David DesRoches) has drawn on all of his past musical experiments, and influences to bring together a treat of a CD, especially if you happen to be a fan of the past new wave Canadian rock scene.

Everyday Magic pulls all of the past beauty of the Shakers, and the days when Dave Rave replaced Frankie Venom in Teenage Head, and the inspired Dave Rave Group's "Valentino's Pirates". The music is inspired, from rockabilly to new wave and beyond. This is a true roots rock record flaring with personality and energy, well OK, it gets a bit worn in a few places, but for the most part this is the Dave Rave record I've been waiting for. Teenage Head could never put their energetic stage presence down well in the studio, but Rave proves here it wasn't his fault.

The CD shines in the beginning with "Everyday Magic" scorching toward you like an unnamed comet. Later you get to hear the pop sounds on tunes like "Once In A Lifetime" and the rocking great tune "Love Fades". Fans of the past incarnations of Dave Rave as well as the roots rock fans will be taken by the honesty and truthfulness of the music and the sense of humor of the writing. The line "Love Fades like socks in the laundry" as Rave searches for explanations on how love disappears made my ears perk up, did he just say that, well, yep.

The CD is the one you've been waiting for years for Dave Rave to come up with, and he soars like no ones business. His songwriting, especially the lyrical wit and strength, make for some great tunes. My hat is off to Dave here coming up with an album I only thought was on my wish list. The list of players on the album is too vast to mention, lets just say they all compliment each other well, a great retro CD from a blast from the not so distant past, this one's in the future of my lists.... Kudos.

Crimson Rain Passion and Pain

Crimson Rain - Passion & Pain

Four young guys from Cleveland, Ohio formed Crimson Rain in 1999, what they had then,  am not sure they completely understood. What they have today, I think they well know, but does everybody else? That is a good question as this power pop/ rock quartet remain unsigned, and have a completely wonderful indie CD here to promote. A good mix of vocal harmony, driving rhythm, and good quality songwriting.

The lead vocals of James Hardy are a cross between Jon Bon Jovi, Joey Tempest of the 80s band Europe, and Steve Whiteman (Kix). The end product of the vocal style of Hardy may sound confusing, but he's good, and very solid. The great rock backing from the boys in the band complete this project, and it passes with flying colors. The great guitar riffs of Charlie Trenta, pulsating bass of Mike Lechman, and thundering drums of Dan Phillips, all the boys add backing vox as well.

The final trip is worth taking, from the flashy "Never Say Goodbye" to the rollicking "You Never Closed Your Eyes", throw in some love tunes, and you've got a damn good mix from start to finish. A few obscenities thrown at you too, but hey, ya wouldn't have a mainstream rock band without that. A very good rock band, and coming from Cleveland, you better be good. Their music stands above a lot of their contemporaries, yet seems to remain true to it's own passion.

If you like the 80s and 90s straight ahead rock sound, this is for you, if you're looking for the next Linkin Park, or even Soungarden keep moving, these boys came to play straight ahead rock n' roll, and they succeed. A bright beginning from a band with just a bit more technical polishing would be completely awesome. Nonetheless, a great start, and I for one am looking forward to more great rock from these young upstarts!!

Goddo Kings of the Stoned Age

Goddo - Kings of the Stoned Age

A true Canadian music Icon, Greg Godovitz, a founding member of the classic band Flood, later emerging with his own hard rock 70s outfit Goddo, a stint with the 90s retro roots rock band The Carpet Frogs, and now reassembling the original lineup of the powerhouse trio Goddo for the masses. If you've never experienced Goddo in the past, and you are a fan of hard rock, or you experienced, and enjoyed them before, it's time to do so again.

You see, for me, my introduction to Goddo came when a fellow a bit older than I picked me up walking one day, he simply said, "You like Rock?", I said "Well, Yeah.." and he said "Prepare to experience Goddo", then preceded to blare it on his Pioneer car (cassette) stereo at about 10 (out of 10). I was rockin' man, and it was a cool sound. I immediately liked the screaming guitar, and the forceful vocals.

Later on, I had the sheer awesome job (that's what they call it) of interviewing Greg in my radio days in Nova Scotia, Canada (tough gig for a fan). Well, to be honest, I set up the interview, so I gave myself the job. Greg was very nice, even when half my questions weren't even about his then gig in The Carpet Frogs, but more about his time and experience in Goddo. Well, the interview was one of my highlights of that year.

To the task at hand, Kings Of The Stone Age is as much of a treat today, as the first time I heard the classic "Oh Carole (Kiss My Whip)" (for Carole Pope). The music is still as relevant as it was in the hayday of Goddo, adding their unique blend of hard rock, tongue in cheek attitude, and "What the hell is that" songwriting. A great trip, from the classic sounding "Such A Fool" , the spaced out "Chainsaw Love" and the classic Goddo look at the life of an aging musician in "Rock Star". A great rock album from one of the true Canadian supergroups Goddo, the boys truly shine. Greg Godovitz - vocals, bass, and guitars, Doug Inglis- drums and percussion, and Gino Scarpelli still smokin' on guitar.

        The Clarks another happy ending

The Clarks - Another Happy Ending

Well for starters, if you're from Pittsburgh, PA, I don't have to tell you about The Clarks, as I'm sure you've already heard of the hometown heroes. The music on their latest CD Another Happy Ending is crisp, clear, and full f passion and energy. A straight forward rock album that has it's roots firmly planted. A better CD than any of the latest offerings by say Matchbox 20, but not as bright as other artists.

The follow-up to 2001s LIVE, the new CD offers some of the most flattering music the band has released. Finely polished and tuned, the CD offers a sarcastic look at life, and well crafted tunes that offer a look of life's struggles and journeys. The feeling of kinship The Clarks offer is is not oft found in music today, and makes the album shine with strong vocals, and musical expression you've come to expect from The Clarks.

Offering a fresh brand of rock that holds as true to the roots of rock n roll as it does to the hopefulness of the future of music. The songs here aren't the strongest as some of the subject matter has been beaten to death, but for the most part the upbeat sound is pleasing to the musical palate. There are some true winners here, some obscure stuff, and some that may get swallowed by the cracks.

The absolute best thing about Another Happy Ending is it does know how to rock, and doesn't have many stumbling points. "Hey You", "On Saturday", and "Twist My Arm" lyrically and emotionally stand heads and shoulders above the rest of the CD. The few weak moments are "Boys Lie", and "Inside You", but overall a clean and good CD that has earned it's place in the rock community.

Dakona Perfect Change

Dakona - Perfect Change

Vancouver, British Columbia based Dakona are the latest Canadian rock release to the world, and this Canadian export is bound to be the next big thing. Taking the best rock sounds of the past, present, and the future of the band, Dakona have a fresh style that is headed for the top of the musical pile. Blending sleek harmonies, intelligently crafted songs, and a power house sound that form the staple of the future of the rock world.

After hearing Dakona, the music industry was determined to sign the band, and Madonna's Maverick records won the bidding war and have released the much anticipated major label debut Perfect Change. I got a chance to catch the appearance on Canada's top rated morning show Canada AM, and was enthralled by the fresh tight sound of the band. The new CD has all the elements that take Rock music, and put a glimmering finish on it, this is how Rock and Roll is SUPPOSED to sound folks.

Taking elements of classic U2, Creed, and Matchbox 20 and blending it to fit their own unique style of Rock, Dakona have made THE rock record of 2003. A wonderfully pleasing sound of the age that is sure to catapult Dakona to the top of the charts. From the opening licks of "Waiting" to the finale of "Perfect Change", the Vancouver quartet have put the finishing touches on a musical landscape in an era of cliché modern rock, Dakona shine high above the rest of the pack.

The new enhanced CD includes videos for the hit "Good (I've Got A Lot To Learn)" and the stylish "Richest Man". The disk has absolutely NO flawed tracks, each song is in itself a wonderful work of musical pseudo genius. Some other extremely noteable tunes include "Soul For Sale", "Trampoline", and "Trust". A marvelous exploration of the human spirit that hooks you and reels you in quickly, the first listen will make you a believer. The lead vocals of Ryan McAllister have a style that hasn't been heard since early Bono, or 80s Bowie. Get this CD NOW, ask for it from Santa, just make sure you add Dakona to your CD library.

Restraining Order five on blue

Restraining Order - Five on Blue

Follow up to "Last Time You Took Me Back", Restraining Order have attempted to
capture their sound and heart on a five song EP, Five On Blue. The boys from Philly have managed five solid tracks that may surpass their last effort. While listening to R O, I couldn't help but be reminded of the early 90s Alex Chilton. The sense of humor is evident, and the instrumental accompaniment is very strong, mixing pure blues tunes with an element of acid jazz, and funk, to arrive at a triumph.

The vocals of Jason Rubin have flair, The mixture of musical styles leave one wondering where to classify the band, and that's a good thing! You can easily listen to the 5 song EP without getting bored, as it remains ever changing. The pulsing bass of Frank Leone will rattle your windows at a volume of 3, The sleek completed with the drums of Steve Spatucci, and the one man horn section of Mark O'Donnell.

Always racing to get your attention, Restraining Order have a captivating sound that will for sure be a winner with the live audience. To hear the class and witty lyricism makes this one a keeper. The beginning?, The End?, I believe this is just the beginning for a band that just bellows to be heard. For a treat, make damn sure you stop by their website. It is one of the most inventive, and enjoyable band web sites I have visited, it holds you with it's originality.

12 CDs for the Price of 1!

     Perfect Gnats

Perfect Gnats - All Thrums

First off, what is a Perfect Gnat ? The answer may be simple, and maybe a bit inventive, but still begs to ask why? Perfect Gnats were "hatched" on July 4th in Grand Haven, Michigan as the warm weather brought a swarm of....... yep, you guessed it Gnats into the lives of a band searching for a name, and of course there is that reference to Kansas' "Father Padilla Meets The Perfect Gnat". What you end up with is a semi-polished group that seems to strive to be simple in their music approach. The sound is layered with uncomplicated guitar work amidst a textured bass and rhythmic drums.

A sound that is as much roots rock from the 1970s as it is an attempt to alter the modern rock scene of today. The end result is pleasant enough, but lacks the flair and substance of many of it's rivals. Perfect Gnats do mix intense vocal harmonies with a stylish backdrop, which is an ambient pleasure that at times falls a bit short with basic lyric structure and a flashback of circa 70s REO Speedwagon, or the 1980s Kerry Livgren AD. A good starting place for a dad and his boys ( Glenn , Andrew , and Adam McArdell ) with an injection of energy from the soul the McArdell family would have a substantial CD that may not get overlooked. As I mentioned, a good style, but we've been here before.

I can hear the future of Perfect Gnats evolving into a well oiled machine with some catchier tunes and spit polished sound. A good indie CD that has room for improvement, yet an air of originality not swayed by the power of today's rock radio. Dad ( Glenn ) does most of the vocal work with the exception of "Alive" with vocals by Adam. Glenn also holds the duties of guitars, bass, and drum programming. Andrew adds his guitar with Adam adding bass work. For a first effort, I do recommend All Thrums, with some reservations.

The name of the CD All Thrums does seem to be a suitable name for the CD, with a definition of Thrums being "Music. To play (a stringed instrument) idly or monotonously: thrummed a guitar..." . With the definition in mind, Perfect Gnats seem to have found their sound, with obvious influences from 70s rock supergroups to the Beatles. Be looking for Perfect Gnats to improve as experience and time pass, with a solid sound that just needs to establish it's identity a bit stronger.

The Swindles songs in the key of T

The Swindles - Songs in the key of T

The most fun you can have with your clothes on ! Mitch Webb and cohorts have put together a very energetic album filled with sounds of Roots Rock, Rockabilly, alt. country and Texas accordion stuck in that gives some tracks a rockin zydeco feel. A clear sense of humor shines through in the lyrics, and at times the songs are more about life and the lack thereof.

The driving tempo and attitude, mixed with powerful vocals make this a very enjoyable experience. I have to say, if there is this much energy and charisma transformed to the CD, the live shows must be staggering. A great collection of originals, with some unexpected cover songs. From Jim Stafford's "Spiders and Snakes" , The Steve Miller Band's "Ain't That Lovin' You Baby" , Fats Domino's "I'm Ready", and Freddy Fenders "Before the next Teardrop Falls".

The infectious sound will keep you coming back for more and hook you. "4th of July" puts a different shift on the subject of divorce as it claims "....Got a house payment and alimony, But I won't moan and I won't cry 'cause today I declare my 4th of July". The Swindles have an unmistakable flair to entertain the listener and have fun doing it. An independent release that is very well put together and can stand up to the production standards of any CD on the market today.

The Swindles bill themselves as Texas garage rock which is a fair description, but with the flow fits more into the alt. country and roots rock
category. "Song's In The Key Of T" is a rollicking full force, in your face
attack. The previous CD (self titled) is very good, but the energy level ,
confidence, and maturity (In a juvenile sense) on Songs in the key of T
overshadows the last. Texas music from the heart of the lone star state will get you moving, guaranteed. I'm not exactly sure, but I think the CD could justas easily have been called Songs in the key of TEXAS". Strong CD that you won't want to stop playing.

Marshall Crenshaw - What's In The Bag?

Eleven tracks, all but two at least co-written by Crenshaw, and one unusual pick for the style of MC, track 3 is actually a Prince tune "Take Me With You". What does that say about the new MC recording? ..... Well Done !!! Classic Crenshaw style with the laid back but soulful vocals, guitar work at times blistering, hook after hook of stylish rock that sounds old and new at the same time.

Marshall Crenshaw has always had the ability to sweep the listener away with his effortless and mystical lyrics that can grip your soul, or slap you in the face. The new CD What's In The Bag is no exception with songs about love, yearning, soul searching, and an instrumental guitar driven track " AKA A Big Heavy Hot Dog". A total trip of audio passion from the first chord to the last lick.

There are some truly amazing standout tunes on this disk that could find themselves just as easily on AC radio as they could Rock or Adult Alternative. Marshall Crenshaw has matured here, but brings with him the same innocence that drew listeners to him in the first place. There are only two singer-songwriters that have the instrumental talent and vocal prowess to pull off the sound this CD offers, one is Bruce Cockburn, the other is Marshall Crenshaw. A true delight from one of the best, blending rock, blues and jazz influences into a truly enjoyable CD.

MC's vox can be as tender as a gentle kiss, and as troubling as a roar of thunder while never alienating the listener. Tracks of note include "Will We Ever?", an infectious rendition of Prince's "Take Me With You", the funk based "I'd Rather Be With You", and the sultry "Alone In A Room". Truly one of
Crenshaw's finest works, a great mix of both style and emotion, be sure to check it out. Congratulations to MC for sticking to his guns and making music HE is comfortable making, and wants to record.

Trailer Bride - Hope Is A Thing With Feathers

I never thought I would ask this question, but found I had to do so. What do you get when you mix vocal styling somewhere between Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch with music ranging from The 4 Non Blondes to Wall Of Voodoo. The answer to this question came to me in a trance when I first put on the new CD by Trailer Bride on Bloodshot Records.

This is one of the most difficult CDs to categorize I've listened to in quite some time, so I'm not going to try. What I can tell you is the mix of eerie and mesmerizing music mixed with raw female vocals is alluring. Some of the songs are downtrodden , and some are medium tempo brain twisters. The lyrics here can range from the pure country to the sublime, however that is the attraction of Trailer Bride. An eclectic merge of styles that make Trailer Bride a unique and enthralling taste to be savored.

Melissa Swingle's vocals are rough edged and captivating, The guitar fashion of Tim Barnes makes you feel like you are outside a crowded bar listening precariously when you hear the band through walls and one open doorway. Daryl White (bass) and John Bowman (percussion) provide the glue that makes this a rare treat for the listener who needs not just to be entertained, rather liberated from the same old music day after day.

There are some true noteworthy songs here "destiny", the poignant "Vagabond Hotel", and the simple "Drive With The Wind" complete with a Dylan inspired harmonica. This is poetry for the warped of mind, that can still hold a clever charm. Trailer Bride have done something new and enticing with Hope Is A Thing With Feathers , the total package is addicting to those especially who want something different and fresh. An alternative approach to the norm and a pleasurable enough listen.

54 40 - Goodbye Flatland

From Vancouver, B.C., Canada 54 40 have been a driving force in the modern rock scene in Canada for some time. They've always opted to do things their own way, and with "Goodbye Flatland" they did exactly that deciding to make an independent CD rather than the label backed music they've done in the past. This time around they don't disappoint, rather they surprise with bringing their signature sound back with a modern edge.

The power vocals of Neil Osborne have not been as prevalent since "Trusted By Millions" was released in 1998. The driving beat, breakneck guitar from Phil Camparelli, bass from Brad Merritt, and scorching drums from Matt Johnson bring together a new CD that is worthy of the 54 40 brand. The songwriting is again solid and takes you back to the roots of the band, blending full force driving rock with stunning melodies at times that sweep you away.

The total package is in full force from a mainstay in the Canadian rock scene. 54 40 have a huge following already, with the release of "Goodbye Flatland" it is sure to grow adding new legions to the fan base. By far the best modern rock CD of the year so far, and deserving of a listen by all rock fans everywhere. Since the days at Warner/Reprise records to their tenure with Columbia records
and this new indie release, 54 40 never cease to bring us unforgettable hook laden rock for the ages.

Some songs of note are "Ride", a mid tempo scorcher that is sure to be a live favorite. Other tunes worthy of being singled out are "Hope The Hell I Haven't Died", "Goodbye Flatland" and "Giants". 54 40 once again bring their dizzying brand of Canadian modern rock to the forefront with "Goodbye Flatland", from start to finish a pure rock gem. You owe it to yourself to pick up "Goodbye
Flatland" as soon as possible, a great CD from an awesome band.

Glenn Kaiser Band - Blacktop

Those who are familiar with Christian rock scene will know of Glenn Kaiser , front man for the electrifying metal band "The Resurrection band. This is not a metal CD, but a power rock and blues CD , Kaiser's third disk with GKB. The sound is a heavy powerhouse electric blues, the difference is Kaiser still holds his faith very strongly which makes this a positive blues CD. The music
is pure, dazzling and raw with Kaiser's growling vocals in the forefront.

The songs range from alcohol addiction to a personal strength and faith. The blistering guitar work and vocals from Kaiser are in a word, Incredible. The sound is completed by longtime Rez band bassist Roy Montroy, and drummer Ed Bialach. Special guests here are Rick Derringer (Rock and Roll hootchie-koo) and guitar virtuoso Dave Beegle. The mix sounds like a number of 70s rock
bands, like Bad Company and Boston, while still remaining fresh and original.

Kaiser's vocal range can go from Paul Rodgers (Bad Company) to Brian Johnson (AC/DC) and suits the designated formula of making a blues rock CD for the ages to a T. From pure blues "Full Time Love" to the classic rock sound of "Bottle Down". Scorching music from start to finish with so much strength and attitude, it forces you to become enthralled with it's complexity. A great listen from start to finish that makes you wonder why you may not have listened before, I have and his last album "Carolina Moon" demands attention as well.

Dynamic production helps you hear the layering of the tunes, and it can drive you to sit up and take notice. I was pleasantly rewarded by receiving this CD as GKB are an astonishing force to be reckoned with. I recommend highly to add this CD to your collection for the guitar work alone, but GKB as an entity produce such a sturdy mix they bring the sound home with full force. A great CD for blues or rock fans with energy to spare.

Lipstick Traces - Shower Diaries

A power blues band from Belgium. The music is strong and forceful, and the vocals are pure classic blues ! Lipstick Traces actually are a blues rock quintet that play roots rock, and do so with an attitude ! From the Doors "Mrs Maggie McGill" to the ramones cover "We Want the Airwaves" to their originals, and the Lieber/Stoller composition "Hog For You Baby" the LTs have a sound that is pure classic FM radio gold. Picture yourself listening to FM radio in the 1970s when POP music dominated AM radio, and pure rock and roll took over the FM airwaves.

This is a very good CD with all the trimmings. The Lipstick Traces know the sound they are going for and pull it off without a hitch. 5 songs that fully show the stability and emotion the Lipstick Traces have for the blues rock genre. Be sure to check out there website for this and more exciting releases.
This is first rate blues rock with passion and emotion. "Paris" (track 2) is even sung completely in French, with music that stands alone as a new standard for roots music today. Lipstick traces have carved their little place in the blues rock community with a solid step forward.

The Shade - Get Into The Shade

The Shade is a roots rock outfit from New York incorporating Roots Rock, Southern Rock and country. The culmination is a glimpse into Alt -country. The Shade are: Doug Myer - guitar and vocals, KG Temes - rhythm guitar and vocals, Mike Cykoski - bass and harmonies, and Phil Dancona on the drums. The music is stripped down to suit the style The Shade were trying to emulate. The songs are catchy and at times mesmerizing , with catchy hooks and strong vocals.

The quartet know how to transfer their style from live show to the studio. It is a good album, decent musicianship and the bare bones approach transfers well enough here. Some of the tunes are reminiscent of Whiskeytown and going back further, a honky tonk Rockpile. From Listening to the CD, I can tell you the band have a true vision of where they want to go, and I think with a bit more polishing they could be a band to be reckoned with.

The Shade have put together a nice combination of up to mid-tempo , with some countrified ballads. For a band that has only been together for a short while now they have a tightness that seems like they have been playing for a long time. The mixture of styles suits The Shade as they are comfortable with the country style of "Break My Heart" , as well as the upbeat sounds as on their latest single "Find Away" . The CD is a great beginning with voices that compliment each other very nicely.

There are a few definite stand outs here like "Break My Heart" ,"Say Goodbye to me", "Find A Way" and "All I'm Waiting for". Once the band gets their sound just a bit tighter, The Shade will carve a solid notch into the Alt-Country and progressive country markets as well. I am sure they were going for the raw sound here, but The Shade need to work a bit more on their production, once that is taken care of they will be well on their way.

Gabriel James - Dance Songs For The Narcoleptic

Based in Minneapolis Gabriel James has put the right foot forward on this twelve song CD. is music is not easily to classify as he blends guitar, piano, Upright bass, percussion and a horn section. The total mix creates a constant vibe with some Jazz influences , folk, and rock. At times it even has a small tinge of Alt-Country.

Gabriel's writing flows as do his vocals. The final mix blends form track to track with an air of simplicity. The arrangement is layered well with the horn acting as a background with Gabriel's voice in the forefront, and that is a good thing because this guy can sing. From acoustic tracks with just a guitar and horns , to the fully orchestrated . The songs were completely written by Gabriel, and he can write mesmerizing style, catchy hooks, and a sense of humor thrown in.

The band that jammed out this CD are Gabriel Janes - guitar and vocals, Jeremy Johnson handles the percussion , K. Markworth - bass, A. Rossmiller souding the trumpet, Rick on lead guitar and Ian Stahl on the keys. Smart lyrics add to the mix as Gabriel writes of human emotion, love, sorrow, and jealousy. The CD is a good mixture, but I'm afraid it's not ready for the mainstream yet. I
do recommend it for fans of Jazz influenced folk rock that transports you to an acoustic landscape. Stand out tunes are "Two Tone", "Dog Day Afternoon" and "Little Jack Rational*.

The Clumsy Lovers - Under The Covers

The Clumsy Lovers since 1994 have released eight complete albums, including a Christmas CD, several other music projects, and now a CD filled with, yep you guessed it cover tunes! There is a catch though, TCL put their own Celtic spin (or as they call their music "Raging Celtic Bluegrass Rock") on tunes with a diverse range of style. From Paul Simon's "That Was Your Mother" , a dance
around number here that ends with Earl Scruggs banjo tune "Flint Hill Special" to the J. Geils Band's "Centerfold". Hey, I said it was diverse. TCL hail from British Columbia, Canada.

The band also keep true to the Celtic roots by doing a coupe tunes by one of my all time favorite bands The Pogues. These aren't as much of a stretch, but if you ever wondered what the words to "If I Should Fall From Grace With God" were, The Clumsy Lovers have slowed it down a bit for you, the other is "Streams Of Whiskey". They also cover the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, U2, Lynyrd Skynyrd, a couple traditional tunes, and make sure you don't miss the hidden track, a Rod Stewart song covered hilariously.

TCL are obviously very comfortable with their style of music as the listener almost has as much fun as they did recording it. TCL would be an awesome stage show I'm sure as you can feel the energy surfacing. The Clumsy Lovers are : Jason Homey - banjo and vocals, Chris Jonat - bass and vocals, Andrea Lewis - Fiddle and vocals, Devin Rice - drums and percussion, and Trevor Rogers- vocals, guitar, mandolin and harmonica.

A great ride from the Clumsy Lovers, picture yourself in an Irish pub knocking back a couple of pints, that's the feel here. A couple of standout tunes here are the traditional "Single Girl" with Andrea Lewis on lead vocals and scorching accordion from Amy Stephen. Also a blazing cover of Springsteen's "I'm On Fire". The Clumsy Lovers don't let up as they also embrace Led Zeppelin's "Hot Dog", The Beatles "Ob-la-di Ob-la da", and Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama". A fun collection of works that translate pretty well from live stage to the studio.

The Dharma Bomb - Bullseye

This is a rock record that needs and deserves some attention. The Dharma Bomb are Todd Thompson - lead vocals, piano, organ and some acoustic guitar, Ari Shantz - Drums, Sean Edelson - electric and acoustic guitar, mandolin, and bg vocals with some lead Vocals (where noted), and Brad Berman - bass and vocals. The band hails from the south of Florida and mix an eclectic blend of roots rock, folk, and blues to an auditory frenzy.

The mood changes from song to song as does the melody. Thompson's vocals can handle the mellow ballads as well as the wall shaking rock tune. Thompson also works the keyboards into a delicate but forceful weapon in the arsenal of the band. The timing of this CD is spot on, with ballads that would make Train look on in envy, and rockers that propel themselves to be heard. A roots rock album with all of the attack the 70s brought us with the desire of the 60s folk movement and the lyrical prowess of the 80s and beyond.

The smoking guitar work of Edelson is reminiscent of the Allman Brothers or early ZZ Top. The drumline and bass work take the CD into the next level molding a pseudo masterpiece of the musical variety. That is not to say the CD is perfect, but it is an awesome throwback to a time when artists did and played exactly what they felt, not what they were told to do. Boston recorded their music in a basement, The Dharma Bomb use Casa Dharma as their basement to hold you in with a raw escence of what and who they are.

From the opening acoustic sound of "Jericho Rocks" which works itself into a great rock standard, to the southern rock styling of "Goodbye" (Lead Vocals by Sean Edelson), The Dharma Bomb have got it going on. They know how to reel you in and hold you until the bitter end. A ghostly CD that rocks and rolls with the best of 'em. An unusual blend of sounds, but as a whole this CD works it's buns off to make a point, The Dharma Bomb are moving in with a vengeance, and deserve to be heard by all. Tracks of note "Old Cutler Road", "Trust", "Down" (Lead Vocals by Sean Edelson), the hilarious "Birthday Cake" and of course "Jericho Rocks". The Dharma Bomb have a chemistry that for sure hit the Bullseye this time around. A pleasure.

Paul Lewis - Get On With It

A native of Maryland , Paul Lewis is no stranger to the music "biz" as he has been involved with the bands "YNot" and "Dead City Radio". His solo release on Realize records is a mixture of pop rock with some blues and funk thrown in for good measure. Paul has a great range to his voice, that can reach from the heartfelt to the angry young man depths.

This debut CD is filled with emotion, style, and lots of soul. Paul's songwriting is strong as well as it takes you from the bitter to the spiritual with one swing. I was actually kind of wondering if Lewis could keep it up for the entire fourteen tracks, and he does so marvelously. The mix of electric and acoustic arrangements make a smooth transition through the disk. Everything seems to fit just where it supposed to.

Lyrics that take at times a sarcastic approach to the world, but always maintaining an air of positive feelings and hopefulness. Paul takes the human spirit head on and embraces it as the optimistic hold on the listener is infectious. A CD for the age when there is so much negativity, war always on the forefront of everyone's mind, but Paul helps us remember there is still good in the world if you take the time to look for it.

Musically, lyrically and emotionally encouraging from start to finish. Paul Lewis has made a CD that can actually make a difference in the mood of the listener leaving the depression behind. There are a number of good tracks here, but a coupe standouts in "Elizabeth" , "Believe It", the haunting presence of "Alone", and the life's journey of "Circles". There are a coupe extra treats for you to if you hang around after track fourteen "She Speaks To Me", so make sure you stay after practice. A solid debut effort from Paul Lewis with all the trimmings.

Coppersonic - Self titled debut

The sophomore CD from New York's Coppersonic meshes a tried and true archetypal sound that has a sound of funky rock from the past. The band also stuck true to musical roots by opting to record the CD entirely on analog equipment to truly capture their sound. A funky backbeat, blues guitar and soulful vocals make the basis of the sound on this CD.

The follow up to "Two Bucks A Cup" includes the 3 singles of Coppersonic "Memories of Hollywood", "Highway Blues" and the catchy "Time Wasters Club". John Truelove is the bassist keyboardist and vocalist. John Carini plays the guitars and adds vocals. They also incorporated drummer Brian Trim. A stripped down band with a stripped down almost live off the floor sound. Sometimes you may get the sensation you've been here before, but that's just the sound that is supposed to be here.

A bit more polishing and the guys will have a strong combination. Their full length second CD has it's moments of greatness and a few moments that lacks conviction and energy. The songs are good enough and I like the funky style, but if they have come this far I simply think they can create a sound that bounces off the music a bit more memorably. That is not to say it's not good, it is a good effort but just doesn't leave a lasting impression.

I think the band had a good knowledge of what they were after, but lost a bit of it on the transfer to disk. As I stated before, Coppersonic has a fresh sound that deserves to be heard complete with a rawness that I hope they keep when the next project comes along.

Bill Wright Band - 3

Talk about a flashback, the Bill Wright Band out of Colorado took me back to the dawn of F.M. radio with the release 3 ! A time when the airwaves were ruled by bands like Bad Company and Lynyrd Skynyrd . The progressive blues style of the Bill Wright Band has a refreshing air to it, at the same time sounding so retro you can almost sing along and you swear you've heard this CD before.

I do have to say , in the press release they say they are all Denver Broncos fans, ahem , strike one ! That is their prerogative I guess , it has no bearing on their music. The boys here have a lot of fun with this CD as their are a few long guitar solos that I am surprised a lot of bands get rid of today . The BWB take a ZZ Top approach to their craft playing as a 3 piece powerhouse .

I think the real treat here would be to hear the band live as they have a spontaneous sound in the studio that shows through the ten tracks . All songs here are originals written by Bill Wright and the band. The members of BWB are Bill Wright - Guitars , vocals and harmonica . Geno Sirokman - 4 string bass and vocals , and Carl Holz - drums and percussion .

The tried and true methodology of the music is a good listen if you are a blues fan, but some of the long instrumental breaks may be lost on some listeners. I guess you have to want to hear a good Jam band playing and feeding off each other. I get the sound and style of the music , I am just concerned about the marketability of a band that have so few songs that transcribe themselves a little less than perfect to CD . I like this project , and do recommend it, a good mix and some great vibes here . The mixture of rock and jazz influenced Blues is a good sound, not too pushy, yet it grabs you.

Anthony Neff - Generation X-istential Blues

Anthony Neff seems to have all the pieces fitting together here . The songwriting is solid , the production is slick , and the vocals are smooth at times, at other times a bit rough. The songs on Neff's CD flow with a great simplicity which makes this a CD well worth the effort . The style here has been attempted before, but not always to the highest of standards .This CD does come complete with some surprises . "Oh My My" is one of the great surprises , it could have as easily been recorded by John Prine as Neff . Anthony pulls it off, keeping the music and vocals basic which this song deserves.

This project takes us on a trek through the world of "Americana" music and all it engulfs. From roots blues to country-rock and folk . The songs are well crafted , even if the style has been heard before , Neff brings a natural ease to a collection of songs that deserve attention . "Fake Love" is a wonderful folk "story" that sends you on a journey of lost love and lost hope as a couple have been drifting apart .

Neff even pas homage to one of the great songwriters of the modern age . "Buckskin Stallion Blues" , a Townes Van Zandt classic was treated here with great class and style . Anthony Neff is a songwriter himself that deserves recognition , as he can hold his own with any songwriter today , and even with some of the greats of the past . He weaves his thoughts and emotions in a way that forces you to turn it up a bit louder and escape in the lyrics . A great effort, and makes me wonder what is coming next from Neff.

Alex Bach - Miles To Go

23 year old singer Alex Bach finds it hard to define her own music , so far be it for me to try and do the same . I can tell you Alex has a beautiful voice , and at times a very dynamic energy that flows through this initial CD . Listening to the CD you can hear a multitude of influences , and it is no wonder since Alex was born in France , raised there then moving to Abu Dhabi , Germany, and finally the U.S. Bach speaks four languages , but sings beautifully in English .

Her songwriting is catchy , emotional , and true to the heart . The first cut is a ballad "Miles To Go" , which is in memoriam for those who lost their lives in the 9/11 disaster . That just starts of the journey which takes you through a gambit of styles and emotions . Bach has a clear vision of what pop-rock is supposed to be, and although she may hold back at times , she nails it !

"Kaleidoscope" is a wonderful mid tempo song with great arrangement, and lyrics that really touch the soul of anyone who has been in love . Other songs of note are "It's All Up To You" , a bouncy number that has an infectious groove , "Skies Of Blue" which is helped by a Rastafarian back beat , and the rockin' "Worthless" which invokes the thought so many have after being used by a lover.

The eight songs on this disk are a great glimpse into the talent of Alex Bach . There will be more to come, that is obvious after listening to this project. Alex is on her way up, sometimes it can be a slow climb, but as long as she stays true to her formula, and doesn't try to "follow" the trends , she will do fine. A very easy CD to listen to ! Alex can sing a ballad and growl out the harder numbers at the same time .

 BrokenNess - ICU in Dandylions

This CD brought me an answer to a question I never thought to ask . What would happen if you made the Beatles more contemporary , and added a vocalist reminiscent of early Alice Cooper ? I found out as I listened to ICU in Dandylions. The thing is they work well together , and I was impressed with the overall quality of this CD .

The songwriting is imaginative and the music played near flawlessly . Frontman Regan Barger takes the vocalist job , as well as playing the guitar , keys and percussion . Dane Estapa -Drums , percussion , and background vocals  . And Ray Hartman - bass , vocals and keys . All songs were written by Regan Barger except for the awesome "Selfish Sadness" , "Never Ever Be The Same" and "Embrace" . These three were written by Barger / Hartman .

There are some definite standouts , However the entire CD is good . The songs that seemed most catchy were "My Selfish Sadness" , "Grain Of Sand" , "The Crutch of Every Fool" , and the title track "ICU in Dandylions" . The lyrics are uplifting , You are not out when you are down seems to be the message here , and Barger & Company pull it off nicely .

From time to time something comes along the musical trail that has it's horns blowing to make sure you take notice . BrokenNess have that quality , and it is nice to know someone still knows how to put together a nice Concept CD . The disk has a way of pulling you through your troubles and helps you see the brighter side of life . I have a feeling we will be hearing more from BrokenNess, and I say  "Bring It On"  . BrokenNess have not made the quintessential CD of the ages , but a very good start !!

 Murry Woods & Tangled Blue

Well , I have to ask you , Do you like your Rock mixed with some blues ? How about your blues mixed with some good old Rock n' Roll ? Either or will suffice here with Murry Woods first recording . Stated as being Texas Blues/Rock , they hit the nail squarely on the head here . A very enjoyable record which mixes both rock and blues wonderfully !

Songs that range from your true blues tunes , "I Feel Like Runnin'" , to songs with a social conscience "Trees" (which begs "Don't kill the trees") . "I'm Gonna Leave This Town" is a true southern blues gem , with all of the components . The complete CD features amazing guitar playing , great musicianship all together . It also has the ability to compel you to listen again and again .

A great arrangement of blues / rock numbers which would be awesome out on the town Saturday night bar music . It transforms to the stereo just as nicely too. I felt an urgency on this record that I last felt the first time I heard Omar and The Howlers in the 80s . An extremely well done release , with only few of the independent music scene's limitations . Murry Woods plays music from the heart, the songwriting is top notch , and if you like the blues , man you gotta pick this one up .

A rollicking journey through Texas , taken on a bus ride and getting to see all the sights .  If you consider yourself a lover of Southern Music and blues , you will not want to miss out on this CD , a great addition to any CD collection . Not perfect , but Very , Very good !!

Jack Johnson - On And On

Jack Johnson is a modern day surfer and has the very tough job of calling Hawaii home . Tough gig , huh ? Jack is also a film maker which along with partners Chris and Emmett Maloy created and conceived "Thicker Than Water" , a motion picture that returned to the good old days of surfer flicks . Well ,that is one side of Jack , the other (the reason you're here) , is an accomplished musician and artist .

Johnson reminds me a bit of Alex Chilton , without the edge , to whom I was introduced during my stints in radio  . The edge may be duller , but the sound is a crisp mix of acoustic guitar , reggae beats , and alternative light core . If this mixture sounds a bit OUT THERE , yeah , maybe , but it works here in fine fashion . You see Johnson is a lyrical Robert Burns . He tells stories and explains the imagery with words that transform songs into miniature works of art .

I admit this sounds a bit too good to be true , but the picking and strumming by Johnson , Merlo Podlewski on bass , and drums / percussions by Adam Topol are really works of alterno-genious . The CD may not be completely embraced by the mainstream , but those who get it will embrace "On & On" for the miniature mastermind that it is . There seriously are few who can captivate you upon first listen and hold until the end without ever exerting the energy . Laid back ? Oh yes , easy listening ?  Not in the slightest .  The sheer magic of the songs being able to take me away on a mental journey that does take thought .

I would have to call this thinking man's experience of the senses as Johnson takes you through his minds eye to express an image of the world . Sometimes the problems are done because of exerting to much energy , and trying to bare the world's problems on one persons shoulders . The sheer joy is found within you . You simply have to let the experience take place . I have never said I felt better about myself  and the world after listening to a CD , but Johnson brought me as close as I've ever been .

Sam Roberts - We were born in a flame

Sam Roberts delivers a gem of a follow up to his 6 song EP last year , which by the way was no slouch selling 40,000 copies in Canada alone . Still selling to this day , but for the fans who wanted more , they got it here ! A blend of Rock styles from a punk sounding "Dead End" , to a Beatlesque "Taj Mahal" , into full force rock songs "Don't Walk Away Eileen" and the folk rock driven anthem from summer 2002 "Brother Down" .

Packed with awe-inspiring songwriting , lustrous arrangements , and pipes that shine on every track . Sam Roberts calls Montreal , Quebec , Canada his home . His music however filled with clever intellect , humor , and very catchy riffs . There seems to be a lot of influences in Roberts' music , sometimes you can hear some influences like The Clash , The Beatles , and tinges of Bachman Turner Overdrive . The mix may sound eclectic , But Roberts' pulls it off in ostentatious style .

There are new versions of "Brother Down" , "Where Have All The Good People Gone" and the original version of "Don't Walk Away Eileen" . It's very hard to believe after hearing "We Were Born In A Flame" , and last years EP that at one time Roberts' and his band couldn't even past the gates in the Battle Of The Bands he and his band were trying to get into .

Folks , this is Rock n' Roll in the true heart of the world . Sometimes raw and gritty , and sometimes just plain flawless . Canadian music has been inundated with simple pop , or country . Roberts brings me back to the days when Rock ruled the music scene in Canada . A sign of things to come , I hope , It's not that I do not like Avril , Shania , Terry Clark or the other number of acts coming out of the frozen north , but A good ROCK CD has been difficult to find , But no more.  Sam Roberts takes the hard road , and still comes out on top .

A top notch CD , clever , honest  , but never straying far from the style Sam Roberts is trying to communicate.

It Came From Cleveland (various performers from Cleveland)

This is a mixed bag of tricks from Cleveland , Ohio songwriter John McLellan. The songs are good as far as the songwriting goes . McLellan clams a wide variety of ifluences ranging from Ronnie Sector & The Ronnettes , Bob Marley , al the way to Ozzy Osbourne ! You can feel a wide array of influences as you listen to the CD as well . For instance , "What's The Point in Loving You" could just as easily be a tune from any Cranberries CD .

The songs individually are well crafted , but don't fit together well , and the vocals at times don't even come close to the goal . There are a few good tracks here , and some that sound hollow , then others that stick out like a sore thumb. The production budget was probably a bit low , but that is to be expected sometimes on an independent project . The big problem is some of the vocals get lost , even buried by the music which makes it hard to listen to.

It's not bad , I can't completely recommend the CD either , as listening from beginning to end can be a chore in itself . >From metal riffs , to 60s bubble gum, Rasta beats , ad easy listening mixed together on one disc . That is a perspective from one individual , ME . Compilation records like this have always been a sore spot for me as it jumps from style to style with the only element holding it together is the city they originate from . This makes it ever more difficult to listen to from start to finish .Samples of all the songs are available to be downloaded in part (so you can listen) for free at http://www.m3.com/fromcleveland and http://artist.amazon.com/itcamefromcleveland . I just think the songwriting and the talent would have been better served on about 3 compilation CDs so people could choose the style they want . If you're from the area though , you may want this .

As songs go , individually , they are not bad . Some of  the singers McLellan has chosen to work with need to hone their skills a bit more , that takes the overall rating down , good songwriting does not a Great CD make . Check out the sound clips , and judge for yourself .

Written On The Hood Of An Old Car (Songs by Bob Velvin)

This is a concept album dreamed up by Bob Velvin . All tracks were written , arranged , and produced by Velvin . The songs are said to be a roadmap of Bob's journey's and life experiences . Bob himself states he is no singer , so he acquired help from some vocalist friends from the Nashville area to help him out. Joe Pagnetta , Duane Farvis , Tom Mason , Patton James , Kathy Crow , Rocky McCoy , Doug Hoekstra , Eric Hoeg , and Ron Lasalle all lend their talents to the project . The conceptual idea is cool , and the songwriting is good too .

The vocals on the CD are not always spot on , but it is enjoyable to listen to just the same . The sound takes a spin more in the line of a retro Broadway show than a concept CD however . The tunes all fit together well , and the styling of the music reminds you of an early 70s Springsteen , to an 80s John Cafferty . I think this would be a blast to see as a stage presentation , I envision something in the line of Grease ! The neat thing is , some of the songs could even be done by Meatloaf , and done well ("Out There On Te Boardwalk" would suit Meatloaf''s vocals well).

The weakest point on the CD as I mentioned before , would have to be some of the vocals , Especially the tw that are trying way too hard to sound like The Boss  . These are Rocky McCoy on "American Thunder" and Ron Lasalle growlin' through "4:30 in Memphis"  . The high points here are the songwriting first and foremost . Two tunes really rise above the rest here , "Careless Years" sung by Eric Hoeg , and "till It Hurts" , a duet with Joe Pagetta and Kathy Crow .

If you are looking at taking a short trip through America , but don't have the cash , let "Written On The Hood Of An Old Car" be the driver in your CD player. Take the trip through the eyes of Bob Velvin . I recommend this CD on the fun factr alone , but at times it does fall well short of the mark on the vocal end . Velvin is a good songwriter , and would do well in Musicals .

Welcome to Baton Rouge   Aaaaayeeee !!

These cats , woops , hounds kick zydeco music in a whole new direction . A fun CD from beginning to end . A little zydeco , mixed with some cajun , blues and rock and roll !! You really will have to hear this to totally appreciate it . A great blend of music with top notch production , One of the best indie recordings I've heard !

There is no place on this disk where something jumps out and grabs your ears in a headlock . The music is well arranged , and the vocals are cool too . A blast of fun for the ears , and lyrics that are for the most part bright and amusing , and just right for the style of this project . All songs except "Hot Tamale Baby" (Clifton Chenier) , were written at least in part by Chris Belleau .

There are some really great tunes on this CD , some of the best are "Easy Credit Lovin' " , "Way Out In The Country" , the wonderful "The Hanging Waltz" , Repeat Offender" and "Funky n The Bayou" . All the songs have a quality to them that seems to fit as they run from blues to zydeco to rockabilly and back again . If your not tapping your foot by song #2 , you are paralyzed , contact your local physician immediately !

The only slight draw back to the CD is Chris holds back on his vocals too often , and doesn't let fly like the music calls for . Chris has a great voice , but the tuneage here calls for a bit more of the wild man , like he shows us in "Hot Tamale Baby" , and "Funky On
