Alex Gomez - Always Never

Blues, jazz, hard liquor, and bad women are at the core of Alex Gomez's second album Always Never. With the smooth sounds of the slide guitar, this album is a must listen. Gomez wails with a raspy voice and plays some seriously cool jams on the guitar. His riffs will pull you in and make you pull up a chair and join him drinking. It's the kind of music you want to listen to when you plan to get drunk. Hard enough to help you get the shots down but smooth enough to keep your head from pounding. Alex Gomez has that old school pouring your heart out at a bar sound perfected. His CD cover even has a dotted photo to give it that old school feel.

Forget the packaging and the bland studio engineering. Always Never is raw and not afraid to get dirty. Gomez has real talent and a sound that mainstream music sorely needs. It's music that you can wallow in and not feel guilty about, music that you can listen to on a lonely Saturday night and howl to, music not just with attitude but also with character.

It's songs like 'Women Trouble', 'Back To the Grind', and 'New Orleans' with their saucy licks that give this album its character. You can almost swing to the ten songs. But Alex Gomez would need to smooth out his singing for that to happen. The greatest parts of the album are the guitar solos. I almost wish he had made an instrumental album, nothing but the man and his sweet guitar. He's a master on the instrument and if he could add some more depth to his voice to match that skill, he'd be pure blues. He could even go the other direction and add more of a twang to his voice for a country sound. Either way, Alex Gomez is definitely a man to watch for in the future.
