DVD AVENUE

You know, since DVD started becoming mainstream you could almost see this coming.... Well, I mean they started with VHS, but the tapes were really big and bulky, and there really weren't that many shows that really made the transition well. With DVD, TV shows make the transition much easier, the discs are thinner, the packaging is smaller and much easier to store. You can store a whole TV Season on DVD easily and with as much room as it may take to store maybe 3 VHS tapes at most, alot of the Seasons can fit in a space the width it would take to fit ONE VHS tape, or less.

Anyway, welcome and enjoy the  TV on DVD Review of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, The complete Epic 32 Episodes on One DVD set.

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century
The Complete Epic Series

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century - Front CoverThe 1970s and 1980s came up with some great television shows, but there were also many that tried to capitalize on the popularity of the Sci-Fi movie craze. The technology for special effects in the 70s and 80s was nowhere near as advanced as it is today, thus we have some Sci-Fi series that are by today's series "campy" to say the least. If you are wondering what I mean, well, the effects may look laughable by today's CGI standards, but we have to remember that a lot of the flying spaceships were models on strings and not the real thing. It took much time to film the sequences, but they do look a little fake as compared to the sci-fi of today.

Then there are those that really didn't take themselves too seriously in the first place, enter Glen A. Larson (Battlestar Galactica, The A-Team) and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (Universal Pictures). When you take an astronaut that had been frozen for 500 years and wake him up, first thing he does is ask for an aspirin, they don't know what he is talking about. Add more characters that at first think he may be a spy, The wise-cracking robot Twiki, the straight laced Computer Intelligence in a box Dr. Theopolis (Theo), and Colonel Wilma Deering (Erin Gray), and you have a mix-mash of personalities and some jokes that are funny, but seem sometimes a bit stale. The thing is, with Buck Rogers In The Blockbuster_220x80_4-21-05 25th Century (Universal Pictures), you aren't supposed to take this show too seriously, don't expect a lot of technical jargon or the like, I mean honestly, it doesn't seem like the residents of New Chicago even studied any of the earths history, we seem to know more today about prehistoric life than they know about 500 years earlier.

Ok, so we get that out of the way, the real thing is this, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (Universal Pictures) is a fun sci-fi romp that keeps you smiling and giggling while trying to give you some outer space sequences. If you like old sci-fi, this is an awesome DVD  set, and so much of the story line really reflects what life was about, a kind of reflection on our lifestyles and fashions in the late 70s and early 80s as it is a science fiction story. Gil Gerard and crew are a lighthearted and fun cast of characters that bring us an enjoyable series to see again. If you are a bit young to remember the first series you may want to check out the Sci-Fi channel re-runs prior to purchasing this 5 DVD box set, but if you are looking for a great piece of Americana Television history, and already know what to expect, by all means, order this up now. Fun if you know what you are getting, but do not expect the greatest visual effects or story lines, and remember this was made to be a comedy as well as sci-fi show. Buck Rogers in the 25th Century - Back cover

I like it and recommend it, and think if you go into watching Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (Universal Pictures) on DVD with the right mind-set, you will like it too. The one drawback is this, there are absolutely no extras, well there is a description of each episode, but no bloopers, no never before seen footage or bonus material, but the complete 32 episodes makes this a fun and memorable experience just the same.
