Chris Byrd is not your typical heavyweight. In fact ,he’s not your typical boxer.

The youngest of eight children, some have accused him of being too nice to be a fighter but one look at his record and you realise good guys can finish first in the brutal, unforgiving sport of boxing.

Following a decorated amateur career, which included a silver medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Chris Byrd decided it was time to earn some money from his chosen profession.

Despite being considered a small heavyweight at just six foot tall, and 200 pounds, Byrd has never backed away from a challenge. His courage between the ropes has taken him all the way to the pinnacle of the sport – the world championship.

In two reigns as heavyweight king, Chris Byrd defeated some of the best in the business, including Evander Holyfield, Vitali Klitschko, Jameel McCline and the frightening David Tua.


While he may lack the punching power possessed by some of his more lorded contemporaries, his boxing ability cannot be faulted. Add to this his awkward southpaw style, and you have a fighter few feel encouraged to face.
