   George Canyon CD Review

George Canyon - Self Titled 

George Canyon may still be a name you haven't heard of, but millions have watched him already on the USA network's reality show "Nashville Star". Canyons classic voice and humble demeanor have won the hearts of many viewers. His style on Nashville Star is that of a true and honest country gentleman, not bad for a guy from Pictou Country, Nova Scotia (Canada). This CD from George Canyon is actually a re-release from 1999, with an added bonus track of his new Canadian hit single "Good Day To Ride".

Some of the tracks here actually date back to the early 1990s, some from his independent release "Ironwolf" as well. I know from this disk one thing for sure, George Canyon has developed and honed his craft over the past few years, with an exception of a couple tracks, this CD does not translate from the George Canyon we've seen on the small screen every Saturday night. That doesn't make it a bad CD, just not what I was expecting, I will recommend it though simply for the reason it may not be available for long, and it will show you when George gets to release his new CD how far he has come.

I think a lot of the minor problems with this CD could have been adressed had George Canyon had the help of a top-notch producer. There are times during this CD that the vocals almost get lost in the background. There are some memorable tracks here, and if you are familiar with the sound of East Coast Canada's music scene you will be more attracted to this CD as he blends his country with a bit of folk and Celtic tinges that make the CD sound a bit regional. The end result is a good CD, but I will really wait for his next release to show how he can shine. As I said before the production is the weakest link here, if we didn't have that to contend with this would have been a much better disc.

"Good Day To Ride" is the best song here, but there are others that have real potential to be great. "Her Everything", "My Love's Unchanged", "Enough Said" and "I'll Burn That Bridge" are all good songs, although not all penned by George Canyon. While listening you really can hear a great vocalist trying to come through, on the older track however the music really overshadows the vocals which is a shame. I still think this is a great introduction and shows more what we can come to expect. George's performance seems to be great, but it too often gets drowned out by the accompaniment and background vocals.
