George Canyon - One Good Friend

There are few times in a reviewers life when you are anticipating an upcoming CD, and have high hopes for the CD, then the CD actually fulfills your expectations. That may be true, but then along comes this Nova Scotia, Canada native George Canyon to the scene. Now America got their first glimpse on the USA Network's reality show Nashville Star, where George Canyon was runner-up to the 2004 winner Brad Cotter. Is being runner up on a reality show that features a record deal as top prize a bad thing? Not if you get the exposure you need and get seen by another record label, then you just may be another winner.

Such is the case with the Canadian George Canyon. Now there is no small print stating that to be a real Country Music artist you have to be American, and that is a good thing as Country Music may have missed out on some incredible talent, simply look at Shania, The Wilkinsons, Deric Ruttan, Jake Mathews, Paul Brandt to name a few of the latest..... but you can also go back in your way-back machine and take a look at Anne Murray or even Hank Snow. OK, history lesson over, let's get to the task at hand, shall we..... this isn't a write-up on what country has the best in Country Music, this is an introduction, or a memory booster for some of a talent that deserves as many praises as any other artist in Country Music today. 

I mentioned fulfilling my expectations, well they were surpassed to be completely honest, I had to re-configure my expectations. George Canyon proved to me on Nashville Star that he had talent. The simple way that the music seems to simply flow from him effortlessly, and that proves to be just as true on the major label debut One Good Friend, for Universal South Records. George Canyon, to quote a line from the 4th cut of this CD "Workin' On Ten", : is "....... cooler than cool, and hotter than the Fourth of July.....". George Canyon shows the world where true raw talent, a bit of luck, and a lot of exposure can send you.

The CD starts of with a light hearted track "Who Would You Be" that has the mid-tempo energy that cries for radio play, this could be a big one for him. The barn burner "Workin' On Ten" shows me that George Canyon can handle the fast numbers with the ease and grace of Garth.... The entire CD is very easy to listen to, there isn't a cut here that couldn't potentially be a radio success. Two of the most memorable songs here are real heart-string tuggers.... "Letting Go", and a song co-written with one of my favorite Canadian singer-songwriters, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia's Gordie Sampson who has 2 solo CDs that should be added to any music lovers library (Stones and Sunburn), "My Name" that is sung from an unborn child's point of view.

Completely believable in all aspects, not perfect, but damn close! George Canyon has proven to me that he will be in this game for the long haul, and Country Music should get ready to welcome him to the fold with open arms. George Canyon sings with an energy and passion that is a true welcome addition to the world of Country Music. This is a must have for any Country Fan. 8. You're In The Right Place - There was a time when I had to spend some time in a men's shelter, this is a touching story about beating the odds..... 
9. Bird In December - A classic sounding country song done with dignity.
10. One Good Friend - In your life you have many acquaintances, all everyone needs is one Good friend, and if it's your spouse, that's even better.
