One half of the Blue Rodeo songwriting duo, Greg Keelor's new solo project Seven Songs For Jim is a true artists work. Like a blank canvas, Greg Keelor paints his visions of life and loss, and death of course. The sound is beautiful - and Haunting. The torn down sound of acoustic guitar and vocals twist through the mind, it may sound incredible, but at times the word despondent is what more comes to mind than beautiful. Take a listen to his solo version of "Are You Ready" for example, and then check out the same song by Greg Keelor and the rest of Blue Rodeo, and you too will see and feel what I mean. 

The sound is magnificent, and should make many critics ecstatic as they get to hear music as an art-form. There may not be many music lovers that will gravitate toward Seven Songs For Jim simply because of it's at times disturbing subject matter. A word of caution, even though this CD is a pleasure to hear, you may want to leave it home if you are going to be taking a drive through Canada's Prairies. The slow movement of these seven songs are not conducive to times when you need to be fully alert.

All together, I like Greg Keelor's Seven Songs for Jim. The one thing I have to tell you however, this is NOT another Blue Rodeo album, nor does it try to be. Seven Songs For Jim is more of a piece of Greg Keelor that needed to escape, and it works on most levels. Dive in and allow Seven Songs for Jim to sweep your thoughts away. Greg Keelor has delivered an extremely well crafted work of modern Folk music that rivals some of the other greats in the folk field.
