Jason “Greywolf” Leigh is one of the lost breed of story-tellers that used to be found on every street corner and playing in nearly every barroom in every major city. The norm for today’s music is much more of a formula based on what the record labels are looking for. I know I have made this point before, but diversity in music is what made music what it is, I mean if absolutely everyone sounded like everyone, music would bore me to tears and I wouldn’t want to continue with what I do.

Then every once in a while (much more frequent in Independent music) there comes along a songwriter who you have to wonder why you hadn’t heard of before. One of those songwriters is Jason Leigh.  Greywolf deliver the full package musically, and the vocals and lyrical songwriting of Jason "Greywolf" Leigh are at times reminiscent of such greats as early Dylan, Seeger and Guthrie. The vocals may not be the strongest suit here, but the songwriting is timely and in complete control of it’s listener.

The songs deal more with faith and the pursuit of happiness than protest like some of the other songwriters mentioned, but that’s alright too. I mean you can still have a song with compelling reason and structure without it having to be filled with fury and angst. Greywolf’s CD “Directions” may not be a protest project, per say, but while listening to this CD you can still hear where the writer is unsatisfied with the state of politics and the world in general.

In short, Jason “Greywolf” Leigh has achieved a songwriting plateau that many don’t reach, and the songwriting carries the less than perfect vocals completely. From beginning to end, Directions is a compelling disc that satisfies the need for true And honest lyrics and folk-roots music. Songs like “Hold On To Your Faith, And Carry On”, “If The Sky Ain’t Filled With Rain, Then it Must Be Blue” and “Wooden Indian” take you on a journey of Americana like so few singer/songwriters actually achieve. Be aware the minimal production budget is evident, and does hold "Directions" back a bit but the songwriting alone makes the CD worth a listen.
