Guy Smilee - Merry Christmas (I'll Have a Broke New Year)

Ok, I admit, the thought that first crossed my mind is "who the heck is Guy Smilee?". Thoughts of the Sesame Street game show host rushed to my mind, but that's not him......... Guy Smilee is however the former singer and lead-guitarist for “The Castaways”, “Dwight Deville”, and “Back Alley Sally”. Working on a new CD with producer Johnny Pierce of CedarHouse Productions on a new full length due out in Summer 2005, it's kind of a nice treat to get to hear a bit of what this "Guy" is all about.

In the notes on his website, Guy Smilee is said to be able to bring out the lighter side of any subject, and if this single "Merry Christmas (I'll Have A Broke New Year)" is any indication it should be a fun experience. If you heard this track in the background without actually hearing the lyrics you would think this was a simple upbeat Christmas Song that wouldn't be out of place on any holiday radio show. Nor will it be, because the humor is a splendid tongue in cheek look at how so many take Christmas too far. Really, how many people do you know who have to work all year just to pay of the bills they build up for one day.

 "Merry Christmas (I'll Have A Broke New Year)" is a simple fun song that can be enjoyed by all, but my thoughts are, this song will be much more enjoyed by the Dad's of the world, as it hits home directly at them, or, ah, their wallets.
