Lynch Pilson - Wicked Underground

If you have been wondering what ever happened to the 80s hair metal band Dokken, then you at the very least will get to hear a part of them once again. George Lynch, the man who set down the guitar work for the band, and former bassist Jeff Pilson have once again joined forces. The result is Wicked Underground a truly reminiscent CD to the heyday of the band with some modern additions to the music.

The very fact that they say "This ain't no retro record" is an attempt to try and draw people away from the comparisons to the 80s and early 90s music that flooded MTV and rock radio at the time. The only problem is, to a large extent, the statement isn't true. All the elements of the movement are still here today, with the addition of some modern production technique. When you hear "The Evil That You Are" you cannot help but draw the comparisons.

The two musicians are extremely talented in their own right, but making this CD even more current would have helped set it apart from the pack. The vocal harmonies are simply trademarks of the glory days of the hair metal movement, while the guitar work remains solid, some of the same riffs are brought forward to the modern age as well. This does not make this an unlikable CD, on the contrary it is a fun CD with the elements of past and present complimenting each other.

The best track are the more contemporary sounding songs "Breath and A Scream", "Goodbye Utopia", "Vaccine", and "Closer To None" are the main examples of this. The rest of the CD is so redolent of the bygone era that it may get lost in the music field of present. A good flashback with a bit more recent material make the CD enjoyable, but partly forgettable at the same time. If you are still a fan of the 80s hair metal sound, which is once again popping up, this CD will b a definite add to your collection.
