   Portrait of a Nashville Star

George Canyon - Nashville Star runner-up          Brad Cotter - Nashville Star winner

The pride of Auburn Alabama, Brad Cotter, walked away with the Sony Music Nashville contract Saturday, May 1st. Brad is the winner on the second season of Nashville Star. Congratulations Brad Cotter, I know there is a long future for you in the music industry!Matt Lindahl - Nashville Star 3rd place finisher

Brad Cotter edged out the other contestants in the final vote. The runner up is Pictou County, Nova Scotia's George Canyon, and Matt Lindahl places third in what was said to be a very close race. I think all 3 as well as some of the other top 20 contestants will move forward and have great careers in music. George Canyon will for sure also get a contract, as will, I believe Lance Miller, Jennifer Hicks and others. The competition is over for another year, and many are asking "Will there be a Nashville Star 3 ?" My answer to that question is I will continue to update news on what is going on with the contestants, and I will continue to update these pages as soon as any new information becomes available. There is another similarity between Brad and last years winner Buddy Jewell, Both were knocking on doors and getting rejected in Nashville while trying to make their mark for years, there are many more are singing demos and trying to get by as well.

Last year left folks in the dark on whether there would be a second season as well, and we just closed that out. Remember Buddy Jewell, last years winner? Well, Buddy's debut CD went Gold, he has two top ten singles to his credit and is releasing another single soon. I think it did OK for Buddy Jewell, and here's hoping for the success of all the rest that will continue to trek along on their road to hopeful stardom. It is not an easy road, but I feel all the contestants have already made in-roads that they may not have otherwise.

I was going to write a full review here this week, But I thought it over, and if you have any comments you'd like to make about Nashville Star, email me (my contact info can be retrieved by clicking HERE. I do want however to do a summation of the show for those who may have missed it, brief and to the point! First off, if you are reading this you already know Brad Cotter took the crown, George Canyon placed second, and Matt Lindahl third.

All three contestants do get a chance to perform at least one song, Matt Lindahl performed his entertaining "Jump off a Bridge", and I am glad I got to hear it again, Gorge performed "Good Day To Ride" first, and "Ring Of Fire". This proves to me George is pure country. Brad performs his crowd favorite "I Miss Me" and then a Tom Petty song "The Waiting" which he made sound far more country than some songs on other episodes. We also got to hear what will be Brad's first single coming out this week, "I Meant to", good luck Brad Cotter and all other Nashville Star contestants........

Now, do you want to consider buying the music NS contestants have on the indie shelf? Well, get busy then, because it only took a short while last year before the CDs from Buddy and Miranda were unavailable. Check out my Nashville Star Online - Buy Music of Nashville Star contestants page and see what is available, lots of great stuff out there.............

There will be more additions to this page very soon, I will go a little more in depth about a few show details that have been brought up, and I would like to let the readers know what YOU thought of the show this year, I will not add insults or digs to any of the contestants, the show is over and it is time to celebrate, but please, feel free to email me with just simple little comments like "Brad was my favorite" or "George can sure sing" to more in depth thoughts, and more.............. Rikks Revues is planning some interviews of Nashville Star contestants, if you know any of them and they haven't been contacted yet, they can contact me at info@RikksRevues.com , that goes for anyone behind the scenes of the show as well, we don't want to lose our Nashville Star fix and go cold turkey, we have to keep the buzz going until next year......... For now kiddies, that's it and I will see you soon. I am going to Nashville in June, couldn't get there for the show this year, oh well, maybe next year...........

There will be sure to be more CD reviews from these fine stars over the next while as well, so keep checking back for all the updates on YOUR favorites!

Nashville Star Rikk:

What a great website! I stumbled upon it via the Nashville Star board. I am a
writer and radio personality ( not Country:) and love to discover new, independent artists.
I'm not really a huge Country fan, but got hooked onNashville Star last year
and eagerly made the return trip.

You're so right this is not a time to whine and bash. Quite frankly, I am
both amused and a little disturbed by all the venum being spewed by a select few.
I can understand why many were dismayed that Matt hung on beyond both
Jennifer and Lance. But, hey, he is an entertainer; he is different, and obvioulsy
people enjoy him.

I have mixed feelings about the final decision. Brad seems to be the superior
songwriter ( from what we've heard), although  " Looks Like  A Good Day to
Ride" is still singing in my head. And Brad clearly has the most crossover
appeal, which is probably why I was leaning towards him in the end ( and I can
certainly relate to his travails)  But George is so strong as a performer and has
the country looks and the "Aw Shucks" attitude, you just know he will also go
far. The first week I predicted he would win. But Brad came on strong and made
it a fun, tough contest.

Of course those of us who love music know it's not about the contest; there
is certainly room for more than one talent. I suspect big things for many from
both Nashville Star 1 & 2. But the instant contract and promotion obviously
guarantees at least initial success. So Brad, congratulations on your long
overdue overnight sensation.

My only gripe about the finale, is the same one I had last year. I figured
the producers would have realized their error last year and revamped the
handling of the first runner up. Last year: Miranda came in third and the judges gave her a big send off. Then the profiles, final performances by Buddy and John Arthur.
Then they announce Buddy as winner, confetti, etc, he sings. And John Arthur is
totally ignored. It was ridiculous. But alas, this year, the same deal with
Matt getting a grand send-off by Tracy AND a chance to thank everyone. George
gets the short shrift. It just doesn't make sense. ( almost looks like 3rd is
better than 2nd, which I'm sure is not their intention. It is, no doubt, a
logistical/time management thing. But easily correctable. I was so sure they would
have picked up on this last year). When they sign me up as creative
consultant, I'll take care of it!

Thanks again for the great website. And even handed commentary.

Best,

abatalks

This is the episode I have been waiting for all week and Nashville Star did
a good job of keeping me glued to my chair for the whole thing. This week
they brought out LeAnn Rimes and as usually she was HOT HOT HOT.  Maybe a
bit too hot as both of her outfits looked as though one slip and we would
have had a situation to rival the Janet Jackson halftime goof.
Her singing however was nothing short of what I would expect for her.
Phenominal!!! This girl has really come a long way since her debut of
'Blue".

Everyone got to sing one more time and they all sang the songs I expected
them to. Matt sang "Jump off the Bridge" and the crowd really took to him. This guy
is a serious entertainer even if he does nothing serious.. ummm did that
make sense? Matt has come out week after week, with a great attitude,
charisma, and takes the stage like it belongs to him. I hope he continues to
perform.

George sang "Good day to ride" and this song has legs.. I hope it gets out
on national airwaves soon as I think it would do well. But of course we don't
know who is going to win yet although at one time I would have said George
will win.. hands down. George is solid country and I have put all my votes
in for him week after week after week. I have my fingers crossed for him
though because Brad is some serious competition.

Brad sang "I Miss Me" This is one of the few songs that he has sung (Is sung
a word? Pfft it is in the south) that is truly a country song. He did a
great job on it as he did previously when he sang it. Brad is a serious
contender to win this. I'm hoping he will put this song out on his first CD,
I think it should be his first single if he wins but since he played it this
early.. well it cant be this one then.

Then it was the moment of truth... they brought all three up and announced
the third place..... which was Matt. Didn't surprise me at all. I figured him
to be gone long before this. Matt went out gracefully thanking everyone.
Good job Matt!! I hope your career takes you far and I'm sure it will.

The final two got to sing once again and George sang "Ring of Fire" and did
an outstanding job on this song... In my opinion this is a song that either
you do really good on.. or really bad. Glad to see that George is keeping
it country all the way!!!

Then Brad sang.. "The waiting". Not a country song.. this is a Tom Petty
tune. He nailed it but again its not a country song. It did get the crowd
going and since most people know this song they were all singing along with
him. I can tell that Brad likes the crossover tunes more than he likes the
more traditional country, as he tends to sing more of those.

Then the moment of truth.... And Brad Cotter is announced the winner....The
one thing I don't like about this contest is on the night they announce the
winner.. the second place person is just scooted off the stage like some
kind of second rate LOSER.  Geezzz. They did it to John Arthur last year and
they did it to George this year. If they do any more of these I hope
they change that.

Well Brad comes out once more and sings his first single that is to be
released this week. "I meant to" I like this song but it's kinda.. I don't
know Barry Manillow(ish). Just not my kind of song although the song and him
singing it.....I'm sure it will be a hit for him. Brad came out from behind
and won it all and I hope he does right by country music and stays country.
I have to say I'm a bit worried that he will sing mostly pop/country. But
maybe I will be pleasantly surprised.  Way to go Brad the new NASHVILLE
STAR!!!

GaCowboy

  Rikk,

My wife and I had never heard of George Canyon before Nashville Star.  When he
started the show and belted out "Ring of Fire" I was impressed and he has not faltered since.  I recorded his sample of "A Good Day to Ride"  a couple of weeks ago.  Since then my wife has listened to his one minute sample a few hundred times.  Every time I use her car the disc is playing!  I don't know who will win Nashville Star but I know who's CD we will buy first!

I've been into country music all my life and playing it for the public in bands. In the past decade or so I have watched it go from country to so called country rock. It's about time we put the country back in country music. All the contestants are very good. Brad Sounds like all the other one hit wonders I've been hearing for such a long time, Matt makes Ray Stevens proud, but George Canyon has a pure country sound that We've been looking for for on Nashville or any other country star. God Bless Him .......
