Memphis Radio Kings -
The Devil's Dutchman

Memphis Radio Kings - The Devil's Dutchman

Well now, I never would have thought...... OK, let's start at the beginning...... Last year I was introduced to Memphis Radio Kings and their CD "No Band In The Happy Place" and I was hooked immediately, the trio from Seattle blended a smooth alt. country, cowboy punk, roots rock sound and it was completely spellbinding, I'll be damned if they haven't done it to me again. To finish my first thought, I never would have thought they could have topped their last CD.

Memphis Radio Kings, a trio, use their talents wisely, and you know they put their music together without a bass player, and you don't even miss it, you don't notice it isn't there. The music and lyrics of the Memphis Radio Kings are smart, humorous, and at the same time observant. Charlie Beck's vocals are just what the doctor ordered, a bit twangy, but nevertheless recognizable and truly unique. The guitar prowess of Tim Jones is mesmeric to say the very least, and the back beat of Tony Leamer on drums gives the band the honest to God punk feeling.

Honestly, the reason Memphis Radio Kings are still an indie band escapes me, it's not that their sound isn't wondrous, and hypnotic, it's just that more folks should know about these guys. A sound that is familiar at times, but still progressive, and Memphis Radio Kings prove on The Devil's Dutchman that they haven't used up all the tricks they have up their sleeves. Bringing a kazoo into the mix, the quirkiness and true roots feel on the latest offering is more evident than before, you owe it to yourself to check these guys out.

Memphis Radio Kings will take you on a musical journey of places you never dreamed possible. Mix in some good old Delta blues and southern gospel with the alt. country that they already have, this is a truly inspired CD. The CD flows like the mighty Mississippi, a lot of turns but a vengeful flow that can't be stopped. Tunes that are going to be talked about and create a buzz, well there's so many but some of the better tracks on The Devil's Dutchman are "God as my Waitress", the free from bondage and slavery "Shackle and Chain" builds to an extreme climax, and the inspired "ATF "(Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms) that has nothing to do with the police, but Tim's guitar may make you feel like you are in the musical Grease, or the 60s surf scene.., this is one of the best alt. country CD's of 2004, hands down, and if they keep progressing, who knows where Memphis Radio Kings will end up.
