Rikks Revues has changed a bit for this season, the third, of Nashville Star. I am going to add my take, and a quote from each of the judges, and if you want to make your voice heard, use Music Chat - The Rikks Revues forum, there will be prize packs given out throughout the season drawn from the comments posted on Music Chat! You can also use the chat room available at this NEW Message Board, or post your comments on many other subjects, well, anything really!

Now for the real meat of the show, the performances! The names get called, and what did they sing, who went home, and what the heck is going on with the show this time around?

Jody Evans (Crazy Little Thing Called Love)

The Arkansas native, Officer Evans picked a good song this time, but it left some thinking is this guy just TOO rockabilly, is Jody Evans going to be able to make the cut? Well, some people may not thinks so, but if we can really get to see more of Jody Evans and a little less of his trying to emulate his idols, I really like this guy. Jody Evans may not be your thought for a real country crooner, but I say wait another week and see what happens!

I really think he nailed Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", but is Jody a one horse act, can he give me a little more? I would really like to see and hear Jody do some Hank Williams Sr., I think he has the "stuff" to pull off more than the rockabilly cowboy act. I don't think he is Buddy Holly reincarnate, but I do think if you want to won the title of "Nashville" Star you have to lose a bit of the Memphis connection (think Elvis here) and really show the viewing public that you have some more Country Music in your soul...... I don't think Nashville Star is about the Alt. Country scene, man get a bit more into what they are looking for Jody, I feel you could be a front-runner if you'd give us a bit more country, and leave the rockabilly attitude alone for a bit..... 

What the Judges Thought:

Phil - "Great Energy"

Anastasia  - "Be Yourself" 

Bret  - "Give me  a Little More Of You".

Tamika Tyler ('m Alright)

The Aussie (OK, Colorado resident now) gave what I thought was another knockout performance. I know, she was much better in the beginning than the end, but I read some comments, of "pitchy", I think you really have to check your hearing, there wasn't A second of "pitchy" in Tamika's performance. The thing was, at least in my thoughts was that she was a bit weaker in the end of her rendition.

Does that mean she had a bad performance, absolutely not, a bit weaker than last weeks knock my socks of performance, but hey, in my book, Tamika Tyler is still one of the frontrunners as far as the female contestants, if she continues to belt out these amazing performances, she could just take this thing! I am still looking forward to much more from Tamika, give it to me!

Phil - "One of My favorites in the Competition"

Anastasia - "Strongest Singer so Far"

Bret - "Bring me ... Your Heart and Soul, Let me feel you"

Justin David (Man of Constant Sorrow)

Justin David picked a better song this time around, in my book, but, you know from checking out some of his stuff before the show started, I was really looking for a lot more from Justin David. I don't know, at this stage of the game I really have to say that Justin David has got a lot of great competition, and I am anxious to hear more, but if you remember last week, Anastasia said he made her toes curl, but he is leaving me a bit flat, good performance, but not great. Step it up, so they say, and I may change my mind.....

What the Judges Thought:

Phil - "... Better to me tonight..."

Anastasia - "Your pitch problems made my ears bleed"

Bret - ".....You have a cool relaxed vibe"

Worked the crowd into a frenzy, had fun, and gave it her all, and that's a lot for an eighteen year old. I liked her performance, even though I am a bit tired of the overplay of Gretchen Wilson, but Erika Jo showed she has the stuff that high energy performers really need to succeed. I wasn't blown away, but I will say that as far as the females go, as of right now, Erika Jo is in the running, she is number 2 to Tamika Tyler to me right now. I am really happy of one thing though, for a young performer, she really knows how to take the stage, set it on fire, and put herself into the limelight, winner, Nashville Star, maybe not, but I am still sure this young girl is going to be on the radio, and around for a long time to come.

What the Judges Thought:

Phil - "She's here for the party..... and she's eighteen! .... She can't party!"

Anastasia - ".....Fabulous Vocalist...."

Bret - "....There's a party on my bus after the show."

Rikk - Ummm, Watch yourself Bret....

Casey Simpson ( Whatever It Takes)

Well....... Last week it was the sound mixing.... This week it was Casey herself.... I don't know, this one really left me wanting.... less. I don't know, she was good in parts, but Casey really may need a vocal coach to help her really hold her notes and really get across to the audience, if this makes me less popular, I don't care, I want to like her more, but if it is nerves, get over it, if it isn't, please pick a song that isn't going to leave me thinking, what was she thinking....

What the Judges Thought:

Phil - "You seem nervous...."

Anastasia - "I'm not sure yet if I see a true artist in front of me"

Bret - "She's Hot"

Rikk - Bret, That's NOT all there is.....

Jason, out of all the contestants, is STILL the only REAL country Traditionalist, and if you think of years past with Buddy Jewell and George Canyon, that's good, but is it enough.... I don't think so, Jason meadows has a good style, but man, Jason Meadows, you've got to chill out a little, give me something that has some FEELING! I like your look, you need to just calm down a bit. I like the look (well, I wouldn't have picked the shirt), but the edge has really got to go, give me some country heart and you may stick around for a while, I don't think you're on your way out yet, but show the audience, the viewers you have a bit more than what we're seeing so far!

Phil - ".. I love what you do."

Anastasia - "Next week, sing me a love song."

Bret - ".....You're the real deal......"

 I Still REALLY like Jayron Weaver. Great song, but here is my problem, I am starting to hear a gospel singer more than a country singer. Jayron, to me really has to prove he can be a country singer. Still, the best male vocalist in the competition, but is it a Country vocalist. Pick me a great country tune, sing it with conviction, and then I will make my decision, Jayron Weaver is a vocalist that will be played over and over, but is this a Bob Carlisle, or Michael W. Smith, or are we going to catch a great country vocalist, bring it Jayron and show it to me and you will still be the frontrunner in the male side!

What the Judges Thought:

Phil - "You really sing great."

Anastasia - "I say, "Hallelujah!" I love your voice."

Bret - "You deserve to be here.  ..... Own it ..... be a superstar"

Christy McDonald, Martina McBride?? Christy was for sure my choice to go home last week, I am not saying people wouldn't pay money to see her in a club, but my gawd, that song was SOOOO Not for Christy, if she is still around next week, I for one will be surprised....

What the Judges Thought:

Phil - "........ You could be on a sitcom ......"

Anastasia - "... you could be a modern day Minnie Pearl...."

Bret - " Screw them! .........I love you .......... You are my party girl"

Rikk "Bret, all the girls are your party girls...." 

Well, I am one of the guys who is for sure glad I got to hear more from Jenny, I am so glad she got to stick around. Jenny Farrell's phrasing was spot-on and I am truly looking forward to hearing more from this gal, not my top 2 Females yet, but folks, she may just be the dark horse that comes from the back of the pack to win be in the top three, for sure the top 5!

Phil - "...Can't wait to see you next week...."

Anastasia - "...You were banging up there...."

Bret - " ......you deserve a chance....."

A much better show than last week.... I am beginning to get excited, and looking forward to seeing who can really BRING IT and shine! I want to see some different performances from the contestants next week, let's get a bit more out of our comfort zones!
