New Buddy jewell CD - Times Like These

 Nashville Star 001330

It's week 7 of USA Network's Nashville Star. We are just 2 weeks away from finding out who will win the coveted title of Nashville Star. There are 5 contestants, as usual we will have to wait until the end of the show to find out who goes home. I've been thinking about Justin David, and why he hasn't brought his best. I know that what is on his CD at his CDBaby page hasn't come through yet, and that may very well be enough to get him sent home.

This weeks guest star is Jamie O'neal. Jamie is one of the better new female talents in country, great performance.

NOTE: Buddy Jewell (First season winner) has a new CD out the end of the month, and season 2 winner Brad Cotter is dropped from the Sony Music Nashville label for poor album sales.

The Lomg awairted CD from Miranda Lambert - Kerosene

Nashville Star 001330

Well, LeAnn Rimes is not well this week and she is replaced by Sara Evans. Just to answer the questions I have received, and all in one fail swoop.... It is not LeAnn's character or personality that  have been questioning, I am sure she is a nice gal, it was simply stated that I was tired of being yelled at. That is how it felt with each week of Nashville Star, no one likes to be yelled at, don't believe me, go to any chat room or message board on the internet and try using all caps when you post, man you are going to get one heck of a lot of flack for the cyberspace equivalent of yelling.

Well, I have that out of the way, and I have to say it is also annoying a bit to see Sara Evans reading from the teleprompter. Some people can do that like a breeze, and others we just know are reading, it is obvious. The thing is, Sara is still to be commended however for stepping up to the plate with almost no notice. I will let it slide, lol.........

Between this week and last Cletus T. Judd has made me snicker a few times too, am I just getting soft? I am really anxious to find out who stays and who goes this week. I do want to make one point clear this week though, the other thing I have been asked A LOT were why the women were always going, why were they being the ones voted off Nashville Star? Well, other than Tamika Tyler and Erika Jo, I believe honestly that the other female contestants truly didn't deserve to get this far in the competition. It wasn't due to Gender, it was talent....

Well without further ado, it is time for Sara Evans to announce who will be the first to perform..... and the first name called is ...... Jason Meadows.

Nashville Star 001330

~ Jason Meadows - "My Town"

"I wanna give back to the American people what they've given to me, which is the love and support."

Jason Meadows, season three's only resident cowboy, gets to perform first. I like Jason, but this week he started off a bit week. When he kicks it into high gear, I like him a lot, when he doesn't I have to kind of agree with Anastasia (Did I Just say that) that he doesn't set himself apart from anyone. Jason Meadows performance of My Town will I am sure get him a lot of votes, it seems there are many times that the viewing public don't vote on the beginning of a performance, it is how it ends that sticks in their memory.

What the Nashville Star Judges thought

Anastasia - "You nailed it, good job......."

Bret - "This is your town!"

Phil - "I can tell you want it......"

Nashville Star 001330

~ Jayron Weaver - "Liza Jane"

"I Think I've come a long way....."

When it comes to Jayron, I can guess what Anastasia is going to be critical about, unfounded as it may be. The fact that Jayron Weaver has a great voice should be what matters. I wonder if she (Anastasia) had never known he did most of his singing in church if she would have the same thing to say about him each week. I mean, I will be honest here, there are many artists that build their career with ballads, which I think Jayron really has the most success with, the question of faith or beliefs shouldn't matter. But this weeks performance...... Jayron Weaver picked a great song with Liza Jane, Vince Gill is much more down his alley than trying to do a Toby Keith number. Good job, vocally anyway. Jayron has a great voice, but a less than stellar stage presence..... and What do the judges say......

What the Nashville Star Judges thought

Anastasia - "I can see you opening for Amy Grant" (That is a bit funny since Jayron did a Vince Gill number, but still, does the fact that he has a faith really need to be beaten into our minds, does it really matter?)

Bret - "Let Your Vocals do the Talking........"

Phil - "I wanna see more passion with your performance"

Nashville Star 001330

Ok, the contestants all got together to do a couple of collaborations, one with the guest star Jamie O'Neal and one with Phil Vassar.

The first from Jamie O'Neals CD "Shiver" - "When I Think About Angels" and the second being from Phil Vassar's "Shaken Not Stirred" CD "In A Real Love". I am not going to critique completely across the board on this song as it is a group effort, and I think fun to watch.... Here's the deal though..... Why has Justin David kept his voice hidden until now. I know this was a very small part in this track, but he actually sounded awesome. I knew it was in there, but was it all for naught, we'll see as there are three contestants left to fill 2 spots...... Umm, OK, now on the second track Justin David actually sounded more like Mark McGrath (Sugar Ray), but it was fun to watch all the contestants perform together......

Well, time to get back to the task at hand anyway..... Who will be the next to perform, to live to entertain us for at least one more week? The answer is ......... Erika Jo

Nashville Star 001330

~ Erika Jo - "Black Velvet"

"I am worried I am going to be voted off just because I'm a female...."

Well, I am going to say off the top, that Erika Jo, even though Bret may have suggested this track to her last week, was way off course. This was truly a poor song choice for Erika Jo, after listening to the judges I thought I must have not been listening well, so back to the instant replay, nope, Erika Jo was flat throughout this song. The last couple weeks Erika Jo has really started to slide back. I know she is young, I know Anastasia and company are trying to persuade you (subliminally) to vote for her but this was NOT a good performance, regardless to what the Judges say. This song deserves energy, it needs a powerful vocal to back it up, and maybe one of the first times I saw Erika Jo perform on Nashville Star, I may have thought she could pull it off, but this was a bust, poor song choice that left Erika Jo giving one of her worst performances to date, regardless of what the Judges said..... and what did they say........

What the Nashville Star Judges thought

Anastasia - "You're the best singer and the best entertainer, you look like a star" (Best? Not this week, looking and sounding like a star are 2 different things)

Bret - "You sang it , you killed it" (Bret meant in a good way, but I think killed is a good term, but not in the flattering sense)

Phil - "You've got Sex Appeal, you sing great......."

Sex Appeal is a wonderful thing, but it is NOT everything....... I know Erika Jo has more than that in her, why did she choose to sing Alannah Myles.... Once again, poor song choice......

Nashville Star 001330

As I expected, but who knows what to really expect this year, Justin David is the contestant that gets sent home, his Nashville Star televised experience is over. There is one thing I will say, OK, maybe 2 things.... First, If he'd have showed America a performance anything like he had on the small part of "When I Think About Angels" each week he may not be going home.... What he showed me earlier through this season was he is incredibly talented musician, but his vocals were his weakest point.... And this.... Justin David exited the stage tonight with the most grace of anyone yet this year. A class act was shown to me when he found out he was going home.... "The man upstairs knows where my path is leading, and I am just going to follow his lead........"

Nashville Star 001330

~ Jody Evans - "Juke Joint Jumping"

on his Nashville Star experience, did he expect to be standing in the final weeks of the Season .... "I dreamed it,  but I didn't expect it....."

Wow.... Is it too little too late? Jody Evans gave the best performance of his Nashville Star career. This song was a bit of the rockabilly we know, but it had enough of a country edge this time around. I wonder if the viewers noticed this. Hands down Jody's best outing. I think Jody Evans should stick around for another week, but it may not have been enough to win the voting public over.

What the Nashville Star Judges thought

Anastasia - "That's the real you....."

Bret - "You make me wanna get up and rock and party...... " I don't know as I would take Bret's advice on song selection though.... Look what it did for Erika Jo........ Even though I think Jody could rock Dwight Yoakam

Phil - "You're really different than everybody else, I Love what you do man......"

Nashville Star 001330

Now for my final thoughts..... On this weeks Nashville Star performances alone, without looking at past weeks I believe Erika Jo would get the least amount of votes, but she does have loyal supporters, as do the others, and she has shown in weeks 1 through 4 that she is talented, it was a weak performance while we are getting down to the wire. The fact is however it will probably be Jayron Weaver, or based on all performances my bet would be Jody Evans who leaves. No matter how good he was this week, it may have been too little to late as I mentioned before.......

Remember..... Leave your thoughts on Nashville Star at the Rikks Revues message board Music Chat (Click Here) and you could win a Nashville Star Music Collection that is mentioned above! Good Luck on the contest, all it is is a simple drawing from all the posts, so everyone has an equal chance of winning...... And good luck as well to all the remaining contestants, I really enjoyed this weeks show for the most part!
