Wade Bowen & West 84 - The Blue Light Live

Imagine, you're sitting in a smoky bar. Your favorite bottled beverage in front of you, moisture forms then gently drips down the neck and body of the bottle. Maybe you're waiting for your favorite band to take the stage, maybe a band it's your first time hearing. OK , the stage is now set. Four guys walk onto the stage, people are screaming and clapping, the lead singer simply says "What's up Everybody ?" . Then almost immediately the rockin' country sound hits you and Wade Bowen starts to sing "You got your getaway , and I've got mine".

Such must have been the scene at The Blue Light in Lubbock, Texas on November 16th 2002. When you play this CD, you can feel the energy and enjoyment had that night, and the feeling sweeps you away. This is a top notch CD from Wade Bowen - lead vocals & acoustic guitar, Matt Miller - Lead electric guitar and harmony vocals, Shane Neal - bass , and Evin Philbrick - drums.

Every song is played flawlessly, some in the crowd start to sing along and the music is no longer just ambience , but is the mood. Wade Bowen & West 84 play so well together and portray Texas music with enthusiasm . The CD is what I always loved about Live recordings including the banter with the crowd. Wade Bowen has a snarl in his voice that shines through, along with the solid songwriting and musicianship that make this CD a treasure in any collection.

I was taken away, turned around, and literally shaken by the sounds on this CD, a great work of musical art. If you like your Country with a kick , you won't want to pass up on this CD. Bowen & company have a CD to be proud of and at the same time they have allowed us to come along for the journey. Wade has played with Jason Boland , Pat Green, Cross Canadian Ragweed and many more artists. Make sure you stick around after song 13 "Just For Fun" to hear Wade's interpretation of Alt. Country singer songwriter Ryan Adams "16 Days"

Big Al Downing - One Of A Kind

The title of Big Al Downing's first CD in a long time . If you are a music history nut like me , you will remember Big Al's hit's "Mr. Jones" and "Touch Me" . Big Al was also the recipient of Billboard's New Artist of the year and Single of The Year (1979) . Big Al has had a grand career since he worked with Bobby Poe in the 1950s . Downing also had the privilege  of working with Wanda Jackson , and playing piano on her biggest hit "Let's Have A Party". Big Al has had his share of success , having seen himself hit the charts 27 times so far through his career.

Downing has found a solid groove here on "One Of A Kind" blending classic country sounds with a bit of blues thrown in and a Southern Gospel sound as well in places. If you haven't had the fortune of hearing this Icon sing, try and imagine a voice falling somewhere between Otis Redding and Conway Twitty. The pure vocals are blended with a solid country background. There is some blues thrown in as well , but I have listened several times and can tell you this is one good country CD.

Big Al has a range of emotions flowing through him that evokes the spirit of the CD with classy country songwriting and vocals that can shape the sound of any song on his latest project. I was amazed to here the flowing essence of this disk, at one minute tugging at your heart strings "Jesus , It's Only Me Johnny" to the feel good "Talkin' The Talk" . The tender and heart felt song that deals beautifully with racial prejudices "I'm Too Green To Be Blue" then the patriotic "Hometown America" . This CD has a lot to offer the listener, Big Al wrote or co-wrote the entire 14 cuts here.

Big Al Downing himself says "I think this is the best music I've recorded since "Mr. Jones" . Each and every song has it's own special personality and simply embodies the life, style, and career of Downing. One special note here, track 2 on "One of A Kind" is titled "A Cigarette , A Bottle and a Jukebox" , this is one song that knows what it's like to be country. It simply personifies the country sound from the past to the present. Big Al Downing has a winner on his hands, I think this CD is just one more notch in the career belt of a star that continues to shine.

Chris Young - A Little At A Time

Somebody pinch me , Now , Is this 18 year old kid for real ? Let me just start off by stating , If you are a country music fan , This CD has got to be in your collection !! The first song "Only If You Want To" is catchy enough with a good hook , but this guy keeps getting better the further down the CD you travel. Excuse the enthusiasm , but with pipes like this someone should have snatched him up for a record deal by now !

It is not often that I for one get so excited about a young artist . Usually they need much more seasoning before they are truly great . So , you wonder what makes this "Kid" so special , right ! Well let me tell you , I have heard many veteran artists , not only from Nashville , but all over that could only wish they had the raw talent Chris puts through on this CD .

To say I liked this CD would be the understatement of the millennium ! The pure and simple voice of a hardened star coming out of someone who shouldn't even have cut his teeth in the industry yet. This is an independent release that will probably be used to "sell" Chris to record companies , and believe me , I know some music professionals read these revues , and if they don't get in touch with this young man , they will have made a serious error in judgment !

Chris Young fires the full gambit at you with a silky smooth voice that would fall in with any country music format today . He can sing a song that's so traditional sounding "Win Some , Lose Some , Lonesome", and then hit you with the current style "That Aint Me". I was going to write a lot about Chris here , his background etc. The thing is it would have taken up too much space, Chris deserves the praise ! You've got the sound and ease of George Strait, but a fresh and natural approach without copying anyone. I was completely taken back , I had to shake my head a few times , thought it was a dream , but nope it's still as good on the sixth listen ! Way to go Chris , you'll go far !

A pure country music CD that is a must have !

Gary Cook - The Letter (Songs of the Fundy Isles)

This is a traditional folk/country CD that encompasses the feel you get when you visit the East Coast of Canada . The Fundy Isles are a picturesque part of New Brunswick's coast , they include Deer Island , Grand Manan , and Gary's home of Campobello . The island itself was home to President F.D.Roosevelt's summer cottage . Just off the coast of Maine .

The music portrays the land very nicely with songs of the Island's main resource, The dwindling fishing industry . Some of the frustrations are heard here in song, as in the title track "The Letter" which says "If I could Find A Better Way for Me to Earn My livin'  , I'd tie her up and walk away, but I've still yet to find...." The lyrics haunt you as you live the sea fairing life through the eyes of Gary. The song "Land Of Liberty" tells of growing up and his dad telling of what the "TAX" at the store was for . As the song carries on , Gary sings "...So Don't Speak to me Of Liberty". The tune starts off nice enough , but what do the taxes really go for is the message here .

The music on Gary's first CD is very well crafted , all songs were written by Gary as well . His vocals hold true of the music , sounding like classic country mixed with some traditional country blues . I was impressed with the sound on this recording , produced by Campobello resident Gordon Phillips in his Deep Cove Studio on the Island . There are others here that lend their capable hands to Gary's vision as well , Martha Murphy - Fiddle , Sharon Ogilvie - Bass Fiddle, John Viselli - Bass , harmonica and mandolin , and Barbara Lapham - Cello . Gary himself plays the acoustic guitar here , and adds his vocals which are backed up by the voice of Sarah Phillips on some tracks .

The songs here take you on a journey through life with Gary Cook , and lets you peek in on some personal memories . The complete package is very good , and not only for residents that visit the area , the music can take you on a journey to eastern Canada and sweep you away . Gary knows how to play and write songs that can transform you , understanding more about the area as you listen. An enjoyable journey , and well worth the trip, Gary can pull at your heartstrings and emotions.

Maggie Austin - Time and Again

Rumor has it that Maggie may be on the verge of putting the ink to a major label deal . I don't do the rumor mill well , but if this independent demo release is any indication , it will be deserved . Maggie told me this CD was only supposed to be a demo to shop around and maybe find that elusive deal . With all this being said , I am by no means saying this demo is Perfect, but I believe it brings the spotlight on to a star on the rise .

Maggie's vocals are original , but at the same time I hear parts of others , a similarity to Sylvia is evident at times . The comparison is amde by me , but I think it may be in part due to the late 80s early 90s style of some of the songs here on this 6 song EP .I for one like traditionalists , who steer away from the POP / Country crossover . Maggie does hold true to the roots here for the most part , there is a bit f the crossover feel here too , but being a demo , you want to have a bit of something for all the tigers behind the desks .

Five of the six songs here are at least co-written by Maggie and partner Hoefling. That is in addition to one song by Larmar/Bentley , a song you may best know by Faith Hill , "Breathe" . Maggie's version is good , but once you've heard Faith , I'm sorry ..... She does however do a fair job on the song which is hard to vocally maneuver . I like Maggie Austin and will be following her career , as I am interested to see where it takes me next .

If a good Honky tonkin' Saturday night is your thing , "Kiss Me"  , I believe will keep the dance floor packed . It has a hook and style that will have you movin , shuffling , and tapping your feet . When keeping in mind this CD is available , but of course is a demo , I know stronger production and mixing will help Maggie really catch her groove and be comfortable in her style . The bottom line is I like this CD , it has sass and style that will help propel Maggie Austin farther .

Mike McClure - Twelve Pieces

On first listen I hears a voice that was compelling and exciting . At first I thought maybe Mike sounded a bit like Steve Earle , the comparison is still there , but it lessens the more I listen . I really like the roots style of country here with melodic acoustic flavor . McClure's voice flows with ease through these "Twelve Pieces" . A laid back style , for the most part , that flirts with folk and some guitar pickin' that rings of Willie Nelson , especially on "Hotel Band".

Though the sound is laid back on a lot of tracks , Mike can still add an aggression at times with his vocals . The rollicking "In My Ears" , with first verse sung by Cody Canada (Cross Canadian Ragweed) , is a great treat . It picks up the tempo and ads flair with a rockin' blues sound which adds a great bit of harmonica (By Jake Akins) to the mix . One of the greatest tunes here is "Dings" in which Mike sings " I've got a good old soul , It's just got a few dings...." . A song of bouncing back when life throws some of it's hardships your way , through Love and Heartache . Another strong song is the duet with Susan Gibson "Wicked Game Of Hearts" , Susan's powerful vocals compliment McClure's style to a T .

McClure has a way to pen a song that seems to have eyes on the world around us . He incorporates everything around him , and sometimes poetically and sometimes with attitude reflects the world through his interpretations .  This CD holds it's own in every way from the folky "Haunts me no more" to the alt. country flavor of "The Void" , and everything in between . McClure's voice also adds to the mix , there's no velvety smooth delivery , but that's not Mike . It's a strong CD filled with journeys through life and love , and at times just plain observations .

The delivery and songwriting make this a treasure , not the perfect CD , but a darn good listen . Mike can take us from the hardships of life through to the spiritual , which "Between Two Thieves" does very nicely . If you've been listening to Americana , or following the Americana charts , you may have heard , or at least heard of Mike . If the new single "In Your Ears" is your only glimpse , I urge you to chase the music a bit farther and take a slice of the "Twelve Pieces" served up here . A good CD , and a strong glimpse of what lies ahead, for sure.

Buddy Jewell - Buddy Jewell

A Jewell In The Crown Of Country Music , and a Star on the Rise...

After ten years of fighting the A&R and knocking on doors , making a living from  singing demos for other people , and a couple of successful independent recordings (no longer available) , Buddy Jewell has hit the big time . You know I can say in all honesty I knew Buddy would do well from the first time I heard his silky smooth voice flow effortlessly through his original tune "Abilene On Her Mind" , which was the song that got him on the "reality" country music show "Nashville Star" on the USA network , which he won hands down , by the way .

That being said , I had to wait for this CD , I had his two independents to keep me going , but the local stores didn't carry this . Shame on them ! I know I am in a small area , that's one thing , but to tell me they didn't think the CD would sell, ahem The CD debuted at #1 on the Billboard country album charts , and # 13 on the Billboard 200 , which encompasses all albums , every genre . Well , I am glad I have a good friend who sent me the CD ! The first single "Help Pour Out The Rain (Lacey's Song) " as of this writing has also just broken the top 20 on the Radio and Records country singles chart .

OK , now we'll get to the good stuff , The new CD . WOW , for a week , I had to listen to others say what they liked , and what they thought was lacking . I have to tell you , in this revuer's ears , the CD is pure Country GOLD ! There are so many songs here that are potential hits . >From the slap in the face , fun song to all those fools that passed him by that opens the CD "I Wanna Thank Everyone" that goes on to say "that ever told me NO!" . It is such a fitting opening to Buddy's first major label CD on Columbia records .

The CD is produced by none other than Clint Black , and what a job he does , adding some harmonica to the disc as well . The duet with Nashville Star alumni Miranda Lambert of the Hag's "Today I Started Loving You Again" is a sheer winner . Miranda's vocals are flawless , and she and Buddy definitely have a chemistry , It gave me goosebumbs to hear it . That is saying something here folks .

"Why We Said Goodbye" is a sad ballad , but you need a couple of those too . Two other Buddy Jewell penned songs "Abilene On her Mind" and my new favorite , "One In A Row" which is absolutely perfect , better than the original version he recorded , and that is also saying a lot . "One Step At A Time" and "You Know How Women Are" can be hits as sure as any of the others . It is a very rare thing for me to love every song , every note , and every lick of a CD , Buddy Jewell has done that for me . This CD will only leave my CD player when I have to revue other music for quite some time . If you are a country fan , and don't have this CD yet , you are missing the best country album that has come around the bend in a long time . This is simply a must have . Unadulterated country that comes from the heart and soul of a REAL country performer .

Buddy Jewell is going to be around for a long time to come , and if this is just the first glance , I am in for the long haul . Buddy , you keep making them , I'll keep buyin' 'em ! The only thing is , Buddy is such a great songwriter , I'd have liked to have heard more of his , but they will come !

A rarity ( 6 amazing Stars )

Suzy Bogguss - Swing

Suzy Bogguss , now 46 , has decided to take a bold step back in time on her new CD from Compadre records . "Swing" does just that . Inspired by the jazz music of the 40s and 50s , Bogguss jumps in head first , and boy she sure can swim in these waters . Her silky smooth voice that brought country hits in the 90s like "Aces" , "Hey Cinderella" , and "Outbound Plane" , has a sound like she was born to swing .

I knew what the CD was supposed to encompass , but had no idea it would stay so true to the roots of the music . >From the opening number , best known I think by the Andrews Sisters (written by Nat King Cole / Irving Mills) "Straighten up and Fly Right" sets the tone for Bogguss to croon along with the best of them . She only adds three more standards with Billie Holiday's "Comes Love" , a song best known done by Maria Muldaur in the early 70s "Sweetheart (waitress in a donut shop)" , and a reworking of the Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus composition "Do Nothing Till You Think Of Me" (some rewrites by Bob Russell).

The rest of the CD sounds as though it is a time warp as well , however they are new compositions that simply sound like the Standards . Five of the tunes were written by Nashville jazz singer April Barrows , including the infectious "Cupid Shot Us Both With One Arrow" which is a duet with Asleep At The Wheel's Ray Benson . Another song of note that fits in this classy album was co written by Bogguss , her husband Doug Crider , and Paul Kramer entitled "It's Always New To Me" .

I would wager that if someone didn't know most of the songs were new , they'd be trying to find the originals . This whole thing works , and works wonderfully ! Bogguss has a veritable classic on her hands here . My only hope is that the fans dig it , embrace it , and hold it up for the masterpiece it is . Suzy has taken a leap of faith here , and it works in every aspect . A complete and total masterpiece for the ages !

Willie Nelson & Friends  -  Live and kickin'

I can only wish that when I turn 70 (if I make it) that someone throws me a birthday bash like this one . Friends and some of the greatest entertainers got together and recorded a Live CD , it was televised on the USA network . I watched it , and thought that it sounded a bit tin  . That was of course until I got the CD , this is one of the best sounding live albums I've heard in quite some time . I love in concert CDs , always have , and this is a great treat .

Willie is joined here by Eric Clapton , Shania Twain , Paul Simon , Toby Keith , Diana Krall , Elvis Costello , Wyclef Jean , Norah Jones , Shelby Lynn , ZZ Top , Ray Charles , Leon Russell , John Mellencamp , Kenny Chesney , Ray Price , and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler . If that aint one heck of a party , I don't know what is. A little something for everyone , Blues , Rock , and of course country .

Toby and Willie do their #1 hit "Beer For My Horses"  which is just as entertaining as the studio version from Toby's CD "Unleashed". That is not the only tune that will grab you though . Shania Twain does a superb rendition of "Blue Eyes Cryin' in The Rain" which is one of the all time best songs ever put out in country music . She adds a classy performance to the song . Canadian jazz performer Diana Krall , along with Willie and Elvis Costello do their magic on a striking and haunting version of "Crazy" . Willie & John Mellencamp do a bluesy number "I couldn't Believe It Was True" .

Other tunes of note , are the Willie & Shelby Lynn duet on "Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground" . The screeching "One Time Too Many" with Hard Rock icon Steven Tyler ends the CD with a big bang . The only thing that stands out like a fox in a hen house is Willie & Wyclef Jean doing a reggae version of the smash "To All The Girls I've Loved Before " . It just seems so out of place here , yes there are other styles as well , but none as lackluster as with this .

Willie is in rare form here keeping up with all the artists , and outshining some of them as well . A must have for any fan of Willie , country music , and rock . Willie sounds as good as he has ever sounded , with his smooth delivery . For a cat that just turned 70 , Nelson sends a message that he is in no way shape or form ready to call it quits . There is another CD on the shelves right now to , be on the lookout for Willie Nelson & Ray Price "Run that By Me One More Time". The country music legend rides through "Live & Kickin' " with a little help from his friends , and has come out on top with a definite winner !

Ralph Litwin & Al Podber - The fabulous furry harmonica brothers

This is fun .....

Kind of a flashback to those cable TV variety shows that swept the nation not too long ago , some were good , some were bad , and some of the in between ones were the fun ones to watch . These guys hail from New Jersey , but bring a style of country , blues , and bluegrass that sound like it could be at home in Kentucky just as well . Very few electric instruments here ! But a lot of Banjo , harmonica , and mandolin . The production is a bit flat , but I imagine some of these tunes were recorded on video tape first , so I'll let it slide a bit .

The CD is dedicated to Giboney Whyte , who passed on just prior to the CD being completed . She played fiddle and mountain dulcimer . While this is a fun CD to listen to , I cannot listen to it in large doses or for extended periods of time , an occasional fix is all I can handle . Thank you guys though for putting together a CD of roots , traditional , blues , Americana , and classic styles of country . I recommend this CD just for the campy fun value alone , you can tell Litwin & Podber are having a ball .

The downside is that the sound is a bit hollow . The musicianship is good , but don't be expecting Haggard or Jones here . If you want a kind of funky little ride that even sounds like the old Jug bands at times , Pick it up . They are polished musicians , not the greatest vocalists , but they have fun !

Cross Canadian Ragweed - PURPLE

No , just in case you've been living in a cave , this band is NOT from Canada ! Rather a bunch of musicians from southern USA , who share a dream . CCR gets it's name from guitarist Gary Cross , frontman , singer , guitarist , Cody Canada , and drummer Randy "Ragweed" Ragsdale . Poor bassist Jeremy Plato got left out of the mix , maybe his name didn't flow with the rest , but his bass playing is the thread that holds the band together .

This CD is actually their first "Major Label" release for Universal South, and a self titled CD that picked up the alter ego "Purple" . The CD garnered it's name , not just because of the color of the cover , but also because the band's "Little Sister" Amanda "Mandi" Ragsdale left this world too early after a fatal car accident in 2001 . She was 9 , the album is dedicated to her , her favorite color , PURPLE !!

The songs on this CD range from the fierce rock with the wailing guitar sound on "Anywhere but here" , to the true country lost youth sound of the Texas music chart topping "17" . The video also made it onto the top 10 on CMT . We also have "Brooklyn Kid" with a Dylan-esque   harmonica adding to it's flavor . Stories of Life , love , WAR , lost love , and a number of other themes , Country & Rock.

The fan base for Cross Canadian Ragweed is a younger generation , almost college age of country fans , that seem to be popping up all over . They do lay it down , and kick it up with an energy that could match a lot of the Rock bands today .The thing is , they are definitely country at heart and it shines through . If you've disregarded CCR as a band for the younguns , they have tunes that can catch the ear and heart of anyone willing to give them a try .

This aint Merle or Hank , But it is VERY good . It carries it's own weight in a music world some were saying , as I have read , was going stale . Horse Feathers !!! This is plain and simply a great musical experience , you listen once , you'll have your favorites , but you'll be hooked . Cross Canadian Ragweed's live shows are also revered as some of the best . This here's a CD parents can listen to , and their kids just might say "Who is this , it's great!" A chance for the elders to seem "cool" in the eyes of the children is always a good thing .

A great CD , played in a unique style . Cody Canada even says "We want to be famous , YEAH , but on our own terms!" You're well on your way .....

Jason Boland & the Stragglers - Truckstop Diaries

Based out of Stillwater, Oklahoma , Jason Boland & The Stragglers hold their own and expand the borders that have been defined as "Country". Boland wrote or co-wrote 8 of the 11 songs here . Jason has an edgy concept of life , to say the least . His wandering lyrics that cover trucks (of course) , lying , stealing , cheating , crying , death and despair , along with anything in between . "Truckstop Diaries" may not be for the country purist , but has a little something for all country fans , from traditional to Outlaw . From the "colorful" characters you may find at any truck stop along the highway , "Truckstop Diaries" explains a bunch of those in it's title track , like "Northbound cattle wagon , neon lights , driven by a man you couldn't pay me to fight , I swear I'd never seen a zombie until now . Lord he looked like he'd been up for days , just swerving his way through the asphalt haze , and right now I'd be nervous if I was a cow ." That's just a short sampling of the sense of humor Boland has when he writes about all of life , it's trials , and tribulations .

The Stragglers blend all of country , honky tonk , and country blues with an ease that is seldom heard . Jason Boland is the front man who performs lead vocals , and rhythm guitar . Roger Day holds duties of Lead & rhythm guitar , pedal steel , dobro , and  baritone guitar . Dan Hazzard plays fiddle , Grant Tracy has bass and banjo duties , and Brad Rice plays the drums , percussion , and has the backing vocals that hold it all together .

It is rare for me to hear such a mix of styles on one CD that works so well ! If you are a fan of country music , you have to do yourself a favor and try Jason Boland & The Stragglers indie brand of country . Other tunes include Bob Childress' "Tennessee Whiskey" , "Mexican Holiday"  penned by Randy Crouch and "Travelin' Jones" which held the #11 spot on The Texas Music chart , and written by Mike McLure .

Sometimes profound , sometimes humorous , sometimes downright brutally honest , but always entertaining . This is Jason Boland & The Stragglers . By definition , Stragglers are (1) person or group that wander from the direct course or way (2) Those who trail off from others of their kind .  Jason Boland & The Stragglers are both , creating great music , fan friendly , just not always suitable for airplay .

Ryan Lee - Self Titled

Well , I wanted desperately to like this CD , when I read the press release that accompanied it . I like retro stuff , usually . The press release says the CD is for those who like the Monkees , Bobby Goldsboro , Peter, Paul & Mary , and others from the same time period . So , I think to myself , this could be a far out trip . Well , I was wrong . First off , the music sounds so much more country (which is why it is on this page) , than the style of the tunes represented . Originally going to be a "tribute" to Michael Nesmith , with 6 of his songs here , including "Good Clean Fun" , "Door Into Summer" ,  "Carlisle Wheeling" , and 3 others.

Here's the PROBLEMS I ran into ..... The production is very weak , the instruments are mixed up and jumbled , and drown out the vocals of Ryan Lee all together . Then there's the vocal styling of Lee himself . He seems to be a poor imitation of Slim Whitman , with about 25% of Whitman's vocal abilities . I don't particularly enjoy the quivering of Whitman's voice , but it would have been a bonus here . It is really hard to make out a lot of the singing anyway as the music over powers it so often .

I do however like the idea of the CD . Taking some tunes that have NOT been covered by a thousand others before . The problem here is , the compilations falls short , Way short ! I wanted to , and was promised retro styling of some classic tunes that shaped an era . Instead I found it at times a grueling effort just to make it to the end of the CD . I thought I may have been in the wrong frame of mind , so I gave Ryan Lee another listen . This simply reinforced my first impression , and brought it down some more . If you don't believe me , check it out for yourself .

The concept of the album is ok , it gets 3 stars , the total performance , musically and vocally gets 1 star .

Jack Ingram - Electric : Extra Volts

A good addition to Jack's Electric CD . Jack Ingram's 5 song EP is a great continuation to a career that is going to span a long time , if we're lucky . Ingram's Americana blend of roots tock , country is in full force here . It aint the best offering from Jack , but it is darn good . From the very first tune "A Little Bit" written by Blu Sanders sounds like it could have easily been recorded by The Boss (Springsteen) or Mellencamp . But Ingram does a fine job his own self .

The rest of the CD is just as good . All 4 of the remaining tunes were written by Jack . It's very clear Ingram wants to hold his roots firmly in rock and country . That's ok here , because it works for him . "Red , White and Blues " is a catchy song , "Cryin' the blues on the 4th of July..." pays tribute to America , while wondering what the hell happened to the good life."Run To Me" is a good one too..... It tells you where you can run when you got nowhere else to turn , it blends a ballad with forceful vocals and strong lyrics .

This CD is a great addition to your collection . The disc and style could fit in easily with a rotation of Todd Snider , Ryan Adams , and other Alt. Country , Rebel roots rock , kick butt music . The main drawback , I know it's an EP , But it aint long enough....

Thomas Patrick - Midnight Rain

Here's a guy I happened to meet on a Bulletin Board for the TV series "Nashville Star" . At the time I first chatted online with him I had no idea he was a performer . Thomas was the state runner up to Jamey Garner for a trip to the Baltimore regional for "Nashville Star" , Jamey of course went on to be one of the final 12 contestants , so very close I'm sure Thomas could smell it .

Getting that out of the way , it of course holds nothing as to what he can do as a singer / songwriter . Thomas Patrick does a bang up job here on the 6 tracks of Midnight Rain . Pure country style with a bit of bite . I really like the songs here on this 6 song EP , but I want to hear more . All songs here were written , produced and arranged by Thomas . You may be saying so , there are other performers that do that too . Well , yes there are , but I recently found out Thomas is completely deaf in one ear , and has lost some hearing in the other . Now , that is an accomplishment , as there are some people with complete hearing that couldn't have made a solid EP like this one .

The first song is an acoustic work of art called "I believe" that will have you singing along on the second listen . The rest of the CD is solid too , it's not perfect , but I believe Thomas Patrick has a lot of learning left to do . He has been writing for about 15 years , but there is always farther you can take yourself , and deciding which songs will work , and which ones won't is always a journey .

There are all the aspects of a great CD here in 6 songs , about 21 minutes . You have your sad slobbin' tear jerkers to your up tempo foot stompers .  The mid tempo number of "Family Tree " too . Thomas' voice needs a little more polishing , but it is good ! The songs don't need a lot of work , I love to hear an artist that writes their own material , and can write it well . Thomas has done a good job here .

As always with a new record , there is always upward and forward travels to take on . Thomas Patrick has made a solid first indie effort with this project . A bit more polishing on the vocal end , a bit tighter production , and about 4 - 6 more songs and we'd have a real winner on our hands . Keep it up Thomas , and you won't be runner up for long . Good job .

Rick Sikes - Etchings In Stone

To call Rick Sikes an "Outlaw" performer is true for a couple of  reasons . First is Sikes has shared the stage with everyone from Bob Wills to Willie Nelson . The second reason is much more grounded . Rick "did time" for bank robbery . I don't mention this to demean Rick in any way , but more to tell a bit of background of a man who had his career put on hold by the state . It's been about 15 years since Rick was released from Leavenworth .

The style of country here is rooted very deep in tradition . The songwriting is comparable to 50s & 60s songwriting legends . You could almost picture the late Hank Williams singing some of the tunes here . But instead you hear the weathered voice of Sikes trying to glide through the songs . Not that he does a bad job , but the years surely have been hard on Sikes , and you can hear it in his voice .

I would have liked to hear the once feared honky tonk singer in his hay-day . Instead I listen today , and it is not always easy . The background singers drown out Rick's voice at times . As well , the style of music has since past . A resurrection of new performers have brought the classic style of country music back , but they do so with a flair that holds the audience of today . Some superstars of yesteryear also have had comebacks that are well deserved .

The songwriting is very good here , but loses in the translation to recording . I believe Sikes holds his own as a country songwriter . Writing songs of cowboys , Mexico , and love that many songwriters try , but do not compare to . I believe this CD will stand alone as a testament of a true country writer . I'd love to hear others sing some of Sikes' penned tunes . As a total package "Etchings In Stone" sadly falls short of it's goal .

David Olney  - The Wheel

From the opening "chant" of Olney's latest on through you can see why he has been in the top 10 of the americana music charts for the last few weeks I enjoy the sound of this record, it ranges from bluesy rock to mid-tempo country. Olney is one of the greatest songwriters today, and shines like nobody's business with "The Wheel", his 11th studio album.

For those who may have been hibernating for the past 25 to 30 years, David Olney has been revered by many as one of the best songwriters in America. Townes Van Zandt said of Olney "...one of the best songwriters I've ever heard...". Coming from an Icon like Townes, that is quite a compliment.

Olney takes us on a journey of mind candy ranging from the dark, to mystical, even into the spiritual. Styles on this album also range from the quiet folky number "Now And Forever" to the blues "Big Cadillac" and "God Shaped Hole". Olney is not scared to chase the music wherever it may lead.

This is a concept album like no other in the past 10 years or so. The theme is definitely one of constant motion , always moving forward to find whatever may be on the other side of the road, the field, the ocean. I have to say his latest release on Loud House records is for sure his best foot forward, not resting on laurels like so many artists may do after people get behind them and support them, sometimes they put out music just to say "There, another one in the can". Olney is not one of those as he continues to grow.

Olney's vocals range as well from raspy blues, to laid back acoustics, to rambling mad man. David does it all with a style and perception only he can provide. Kudos to Olney for having the vision to keep us rolling with "The Wheel". Many singers have recorded Olney's work, but none can pull it off with the ease and style of the master himself.

Tecia McKenna - Off The Beaten Path

Tecia is a traditionalist. Her vocals will take you back to the 1970s style of female country singers. Comparisons have been drawn to Reba McEntire, and earlier Dolly Parton. I was intrigued by Tecia's vocal style, I think however it may sound a bit out of place with the country singer/ songwriters of today.

McKenna's vocals flow effortlessly from track to track. The songs have a good style to them as far as writing goes, but the vocals are a bit too strong for the background music. There is nothing wrong with her sound, except I would like to be able to hear the music come through a bit stronger. I think Tecia has a good album here, but it's not great

If you are looking for a retro country sound "Off The Beaten Path" may be what you are looking for, but as a total package, I am not sure. There is no concept for the chosen songs. I think Tecia could have chosen songs to fit her vocals a bit better. The title cut "Off The Beaten Path"  and track 7 "this Love" are the strongest songs here. It has a good sound and a great hook.

All in all I cannot completely recommend this CD. I think work with a really good producer would be able to bring Tecia to the forefront. At times it is hard to listen to as the vocals may flow, the tempo of the songs, their structure, and the overall feel of the album falls flat. I think Tecia has to let go of her zone and let loose a bit more instead of trying so hard to be consistent. It doesn't work here. I will say she has talent and will do well if she sticks with it and "works" with her producer.

Jesse Lee – Room To Breathe

This 16 year old singer/songwriter can write and sing songs as well as any of her contemporaries. Co-writing with Don Goodman (co-writer of Blake Shelton's "Ol' Red" and many more), Chris Anderson (Blackhawk), Rob Heath (hailed as one of the best), she sings her heart out on "Room to Breathe" and does so with the maturity in her voice, and her attitude.

The album opens with “River Child”, an up-tempo number sure to get your toes tapping and take you back to a time long ago about grandparents, and how they meet, and their wrong doings. “Back to The Flame” is another good upbeat number which moves us into “Time Stands Still”(Don Goodman/Kenny Royster/Becky Hobbs) which shines, a ballad about the love and memories of a lost love and soldier of the Vietnam war. Time Stands Still also shows I believe that one of Jesse Lee’s influences must be Reba McEntire, as she shines as well as the seasoned artist herself.

Songs on “Room To Breathe” range from lost love, love yet to come, childhood memories, The troubles of being a teenager, to growing up to fast “I’m 16 going on 21, She’s a girl on the edge of a woman’s world, riding the winds of her own destiny, bending the rules, not quite ready to be free, She just wants to test her wings and find a little ‘room to breathe’”.

All in all this is a good independent album, solidly produced as well by Kenny Royster and Don Goodman. Songwriter Don Goodman heard Jesse sing, then asked HER to write with him. A solid CD from a young girl destined for the limelight, and stardom.

In closing I would just like to add, if you like country music, Jesse Lee does not fall short of any of the criteria in the biz today. If you like female vocalists, her voice is as strong as any around today. And what a breath of fresh air, a 16 year old who doesn’t want to be the next “Avril” or “Brittney”, but would rather follow in the shoes of Reba or Trisha Yearwood.

Check her out at her website, the song clips are not near as good quality as this CD, but you can get the idea. Jesse Lee should be one of the CDs on your wish list. Thanks Jesse for keeping country real.

Marty Raybon – Full Circle

WOW !

Marty Raybon is no stranger to the country music and bluegrass scene, being the front man for the group Shenandoah (1987-1997). Marty also reworks a couple Shenandoah classics here with “Next To You, Next To Me” and “Ghost In This House” both reworked marvelously.

To say Marty is no stranger to bluegrass is an understatement, Marty started with bluegrass, then took bluegrass to the Country audience (Shenandoah) and came back to his roots on the aptly titled “Full Circle” with a number of new songs, some classics, and vocals that hold their roots firmly in the traditional bluegrass style.

I was blown away for the beginning harmony on “Down The Road”(Flatt & Scruggs), and it continued to impress me as it moved along. “Everything” a traditional country ballad and duet with Sonya Isaacs (Singer/songwriter for the popular southern gospel band “The Isaacs”) is simply haunting.

Marty adds a couple of Bill Monroe classics here too, the best being “White House Blues” which left me out of breath and worn out when it was over. After all, what would bluegrass be without Monroe. “Webster’s Definition” bares a striking resemblance to “Gentle On My Mind”. Some Jimmy Martin tunes, stir it all up, and you have one of the very best albums, not just bluegrass, that has been released this year.

Marty stays so true to bluegrass roots, it’s nice to hear, and he adds a flare of country and Americana to blend together one of the strongest CD releases I’ve had the pleasure to revue. The harmonies here are stunning with the mix of Marty, his brother Tim Raybon, and Paul Brewster. This release takes you from slow to mid tempo, all the way to break neck speeds with the help of a well put together band. Including David Talbot- Banjo, Bryan Sutton- Guitar & mandolin, Donnie Allen- Guitar, Rob Ickes- Dobro, Terry Smith- bass, and fiddle player extraordinaire Shad Cobb.

Country and bluegrass roots and a touch of Spirituality blend together a winner. “Summertown Road”, “everything”, “Home Run Man”, “White House Blues”, and “Prayer Bells Of Heaven” are just some of the songs that make this CD a must have for music lovers. Wonderful!

The Lonesome River Band- Window of Time

I hope your ready to take a trip back in time to the good old days of bluegrass. There is a new movement keeping bluegrass alive, The Lonesome River Band do it in the classic style. The lead vocal duties are shared here between Brandon Rickman (vocals & Guitar), and Jeff Parker (Vocals & mandolin). Harmonies are the name of the game here with the help of Sammy Shelor (also banjo) and Irl hees (bass).

The music is every bit as good as bluegrass of yesteryear and the new breed. Mike Hartgrove- Fiddle, rounds out the quintet. A fun, foot tapping, step dancing good time that transports you back to the day when bluegrass ruled the airwaves. Just a glimpse however into the career of this staple in modern bluegrass, I suggest you check out their many other releases as well. This is the first release for TLRB on the Doobie Shea record label and it has done well for them catapulting them up the Americana music chart (http://www.americanamusic.org), and the hearts and ears of the many listeners they have gathered.

The banjo and guitar picking here is really good, and sounds the way it should, sticking out in all the right places. I would place Mike Hartgrove amongst any of the “great” fiddle players in country or bluegrass today. This is a really well rounded album, they can pick it up or slow it down (Stray Dogs and Alley Cats). I can’t say this is the “Best” bluegrass album I have heard, but it is a refreshing addition to my CD collection, and it’s spent a bit of time in my CD player already.

Keep your eyes and ears open for The Lonesome River Band to come your way and put on a heck of a rollicking show. Listen for them on the radio, and watch for them on the TV. Any more glimpses into their musical talent would be well received here.

Andy Gorwell – Uprooted

Well upon first listen it’s not hard to hear Andy’s influences definitely include the Rolling Stones, especially their mid 70s music. On further review, you can hear Andy has a strong songwriting ability, and he adds his rough hewed vocals to each song he writes, and oh yeah, there is one Jagger/Richards composition here too “No Expectations”

Musicians: Andy: Dobro, Harp, Piano, Vocals. Ed Bates: pedal steel, Jeremy Fogarty: Harp on “Old Friend The Blues”, David Isaacs, Drums. Jonathon Lickliter: bass. Rod Jennings: drums. Jeff Stamin: bass and backing vocals.

Gorwell does the alt. Country scene justice with this musical journey that includes songs about trains, lost love, trucks, and songs about the road. A good first release that has it’s roots in country, a bit of rock thrown in, and a teaspoon or two of the blues. All in all a fun exploration into the mind and soul of a newcomer that will be on the scene for a while, and I for one will be following his musical journeys to watch him grow, and expand the talent that is already there, but needs a bit of polishing too.

For a first CD, this is a good start, better than a lot of debut CDs as it is not hard to listen to from beginning to end, and it doesn’t hurt if you love the sound of the dobro. Andy already has a good sense of who he is, needs to let a little bit more of himself shine through, and I am sure that will come with time.

Strong points on this CD are there as well, one of the best written tunes, and moaned through perfectly by Andy is “Old Friend The Blues” . Also the song “Diesel” which is a light tune about daddy being a truck drivin’ man. “Low Down Stinkin’ Bars” is a fun trip with Andy traveling to the “States” to pursue his dream of playing music in every honky tonk and bar, and sampling different substances along the way. “Old Trains” is a good tune too.

Well, thank you Andy for this 10 song glimpse into your life, in the future, bring a little more Andy Gorwell with you. I would have to say this is a good start, and makes me want to hear more, so I will be waiting for the next release, anxiously. If this is where you start, it aint a bad place to begin. Record companies should be keeping their eye on this kid, he’ll do well.

Owen Temple – Right Here And Now

What is my first impression of Owen Temple, well, not what I was expecting, but Good Country music! I was expecting a more Outlaw sound to Owen’s newest CD venture “Right Here And Now”, what I got instead was a clean and clear representation of pure country gold.

The thing is it is so clean and clear that it may not be exactly what Temple was searching for. If this is the direction he was planning to take, he succeeded, but to what avail?

I’m a big fan of the new Country movement that is going on in the U.S., especially Texas. There are so many good artists coming out of Texas today I believe the artists need to be constantly coming up with something new and fresh to be picked from the rest of the pack. Owen Temple does have very strong songwriting on this disc, and his vocals are flawless and effortless. The only problem I see here is it doesn’t stick out from all the mainstream country acts today, It is very good, and the songs flow from one to the other with ease. So I guess that is a good thing in itself.

>From “Accidentally Broke My Heart” to “That’s Not Something I Could Do” this is a strong country album from a relatively new country performer. I find the song “The Madder You Are (The Cuter You Get)” to be one of the high points of this album, it takes a new direction and a fun twist that makes me want to hear more by Owen. “Before The Night Becomes The Dawn” is a classy country ballad that is a good inclusion here because of it’s heartfelt lyrics. Temple does shine here and could be added to ANY country radio station because of the contemporary sound and true country hook. Is it the best he could do? Well, I can’t see a performer putting out anything but their best, but did he hold back? I find the cowboy music like “Lost Highway”(Compadre records "Texas Outlaws" compilation) in Temple’s past to be more of his strong point. I think he has an outlaw in him waiting to break loose.

This is a not a negative, because if Owen Temple wanted to make a pure “mainstream” country record, he did so with style. I like this CD, I guess it’s just not what I was expecting, but that doesn’t make it bad. I think Owen will be around for a long time and he has made a solid country album with “Right Here And Now”.

Be sure and support independent music. Call your local radio station and request your favorite "indie" artist today...

Aaron Watson – Shut Up and Dance

This is more what I’ve been waiting for from the indie movement. A CD filled from beginning to end with Great original country songs that have a complete identity of their own and their Artist's originality shines through. This 14 song journey starts with the upbeat “I Don’t Want You To Go (But I Need You To Leave)” if this is an indication of what’s to come, I’m there! A fun rollicking song that is as good instrumentally as it is vocally and plain FUN!

The rest of the CD from Aaron doesn’t disappoint me either, the very next tune “The Notel Motel” is just as good. A song I could here being played out of car speakers and Jukeboxes everywhere “There’s a vacancy at home, not Tonight at the Notel Motel, In a room full of lies , where love’s stolen, or put up for sale” This CD is the BEST underground country CD I have heard in a long time, Aaron Watson is going to be coming to your home stereo very, very soon. This one is a keeper from the get go.

The Louisiana sound of “Heaven Help The Heart” to the Texas Swing of “Something With A Swing To It”, this CD has got most everything country needs today. Next we’ve got the country waltz of the title cut “Shut Up and Dance” talks of makin’ enough money and keepin’ up with the Jones’, it all doesn’t matter when the man and woman “Shut Up and Dance”. “Stayin’ at home for a night on the town, So turn the music up, we’ll dim the lights down, Let those old records keep spinnin’ around, Replace all your worries with some romance, Tell me you love me, Then We’ll Shut Up and Dance……”, If that don’t say country, nothing does. All songs were at east co written by Watson here, with partner Neal Lowry these are new country classics.

With titles like “Stuck Between A Rock And A Heartache”, “Lonely Lubbock Nights” and the very amusing “Wrangler Butts” this is a winner. Forget what Mommy and Daddy taught you about Country music, this is the New Country Explosion in full gear. After you purchase this album(and you will) tell your friends about Aaron Watson he is on his way to the big time, I suggest you get behind him now so you can say “I remember him when….”. I’m gonna Shut Up now so I can go listen to “Shut Up And Dance” by Aaron Watson in peace. A darn good example of the “indie” country movement.

One Nation Under God - Remembering 9/11

This compilation released by Frog & Scorpion records is filled with hope, sadness, patriotism, and good music. The songs range from country, pop, light rock, and easy listening. It can’t help but captivate the listener into a memory of that fatal day, Tuesday September 11, 2001. It also brings out the side of all who live in the U.S.A. of a pride for the souls lost, the soldiers who defend the country, and the hope in all for the Red, White, and Blue.

The opening song “Thank God I’m An American” performed by The Nevada Band is reminiscent of Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless The U.S.A.”. The CD continues on with a stirring song by The Nashville Players “We Will Not Forget” with vocals by America’s “Nashville Star” Buddy Jewell.

The next song “Rebecca’s Song” performed and written by The Pearsons is a song of hope for all as good things do come out of tragedy as “Rebecca” (Marie Pearson’s daughter) was born on that fateful morning, a reminder that not everything that happens in turmoil is negative. “A Good River” performed by Randi McMatthew has a haunting melody and military drums in the background.

”All American” performed by Larry May is a pop-rock song reminding us we are all American together, like it or not, through good and bad. “These Three Colors” is a tune performed by Marvin Sinclair in an Americana tone “The stars and stripes forever, the good old Red, White, and Blue…”. “Intervene” is a song done in the vein of Joan Osborne or Ani DiFranco. “I Pledge Allegiance Again” sounds like it could have been sung by Michael W. Smith, but was done brilliantly by George Searcy.

The standouts I have found here are both songs sung by Buddy Jewell, the lyrics to the second “On An Ordinary Tuesday” are very heart wrenching, and strong. “Praise The Glory of America” done by the Nevada Band is another favorite.

Actually, you may not like all styles of music, but they seem to fit here as they all have the same message. I recommend this disc for fans of Music and those who never want to forget 9/11. As Jim Sales sings “We are All Forever Changed”.

This is not the best CD on the market today, but definitely holds it’s own with music of remembrance and tribute for Americans lost, injured, and the brave that fight in the country and around the world. Some proceeds of the sale of “One Nation Under God” go to the “Believe in Tomorrow National Children’s Foundation".

Patrick Watters - One More From The Road

Alright I know Patrick has been waiting, as some others. I’ve probably spent more time on this revue than others. What’s the big deal, Why has it taken so long…. Well Patrick Watters has me baffled. On one hand I want to say Kudos… Good Job, On the other the music revuer in me is coming through.

Before you get all defensive it’s not all bad, or all good for that matter. I like this Disk, and hey, you email Patrick, and The price is right too $8.00 (yep that’s eight bucks) for a CD full of original material. O.K. That’s one of the good points, Another is The songs on “One More From The Road” are well written, Pattrick has a way of writing his life into a story that you want to listen to.

Patrick had me hooked at about song 3 –“If My Dad Could Only See Me Now” a song about how Dad’s always want the best for their kids, Get you to promise them one thing… But being Kids, They always do the opposite like “Layin’ down lines on another man’s Girl , squeelin’ my hotrod tires”. It’s a fun look on how we do the opposite of what our parents want, come on we all like to rebel, right.

The rest of the CD is good as well. There are times the production leaves you cold, but that’s mainly because there really is NO production. What do you get when you take a guy, his guitar and a microphone in a room? Well after asking that question I can say Patrick does just that thing as good as anyone else I’ve heard.

With a producer, some quality studio time, a back-up band, and a little coaching we’d have another winner here. The problem is Patrick doesn’t have all this. His voice is good, at times a bit forced, but good never the less. If you like good music, and aren’t a stickler for the “Nashville” sound, I recommend you buy this CD by Patrick Watters. I know I will be looking forward to the next one. We do have a solid songwriter here, who, when he doesn’t overwork it, His voice holds up with anyone else too.

Do not Give up Patrick you’ve started on a long old road, but it can be fun as long as you don’t take life too seriously.

The bottom line is, on an overall revue, I can’t give Patrick Watters “One More >From The Road” a really high rating. That being said, I do recommend the CD to you. Patrick Watters is in this I believe for the long haul, I for one am glad I got in on the ground floor.

BILLY HURST - EVEN THE WIND

There is one thing when you write revues that makes you smile. No it’s not the silly emails you get from disgruntled readers. It’s when you happen to find a “Diamond in the rough”! Well, I smiled on Tuesday after I got back from the post office and popped in a CD by Billy Hurst. Yes, the disc has it’s imperfections but it’s purely and simply “Country with an attitude”,to quote Billy himself.

>From the opening number, a cover of John Michael Montgomery’s “Leave A Mark”, which is one of the strongest songs on the disc. I was grinning like a kid. The sound of the disc, production wise is a bit weak, and you won’t hear it on your local radio (probably), simply because it would stick out. But for listening pleasure, that doesn’t matter, you know what I mean. So all in all that’s not a bad thing. Independent music a lot of times is sub par on so many levels, but if my main complaint is that the production is weak, hey it “aint” all bad, right!!

Billy has a good sense of who he is, and picks his music accordingly. The song selection is above par, and fit Billy’s style. This is one country boy who likes to kick it as well as sing a nice ballad. He’s got the kind of voice that suits the “outlaw” genre very well. If you don’t believe me, simply listen to his version of Steve Earle’s “the Other Kind”.

Billy is a good songwriter too. As a matter of fact that is one of the highlights of this project. “Spend the Night”, “Exit 27”, and “Pictures” are strong examples of his writing ability with partner Baumgartner. This guy is one to definitely watch in the months and years to come. With raw talent like this he is bound to get better with time.

If you like the stuff that might be a little obscure , he’s got that here too. I almost dropped to the floor when I heard Billy singing the 80s hit by Bad English “When I See You Smile”, brave choice for a country cover, but hey you made it work for me.

Have fun and try a little bit of independent country today. Billy Hurst is a good place to start, and a strong second effort. As Billy says so eloquently in his liner notes “Turn it Up”.

Enjoy

This CD is no longer in print

A Revue of Buddy Jewell's second independent release "Far enough away"..

This is one of the best CD's I have listened to in 2003. (I know the CD was done in 2002, but I hadn't heard of Buddy Jewell yet. I've got to tell you, I was some kind of surprised when I popped in a CD by a contestant from one of "those" reality shows. My God, this guy is good. The trip starts with "tree of Love" for Buddy's grandma and grandpa. A powerful hook-laden song with very powerful lyrics. "Buddy Jewell is the real deal," I thought to myself. He has a velvet voice , but can pick it up too, I was blown away.

Buddy picks it up a bit with a fun song about a man making things hard for himself yet once again (no, I'm not one of those). It's a "gotcha" song "harder than it has to be". Then there's "King of My world" My guess would be a song for his wife. Calling a woman "king" of your world, nice twist.

One of the best songs on the album, tugs at your heart strings "mama's roses", tears welled up, honestly. All in All this is a classy disc from a classy guy. Buddy has made a treasure here. The production is above average for an independent project. It sounds great. I would put Buddy Jewell against any bona fide country performer today, before you ask, yes, He's that good.

Buddy will be the first to tell you it's been a long hard road. Well it's not over for him yet, but this is honest-to-God good ole country music. There are a couple of "real" standouts for me here. One is "Peg Leg Jessie's Daughter" a song I could hear David Allan Coe singing - that's a compliment too. Buddy can do the outlaw "stuff" as well as the polished country music. My favorite song , and I think the high point on this disc is "The Ring" ...What a story, what a song (editor's note: If I were still a radio programmer, I would have no problem adding this song, It has "hit" written all over it !).

Buddy Jewell has the whole thing a-goin' on. He can sing as good as anybody . He writes a heck of a song. He puts it together well. I think we will be hearing a lot from Buddy in the future.

Billy Joe Shaver's "Freedom's Child" ... A Masterpiece ...
(Compadre records)

You know, a strange thing happened to me the other day, someone asked me “what is COUNTRY?”

Well, I didn’t give them an answer, I couldn’t off the top of my head. What I did do was listen to Tom T. Hall “Country Is”, and David Allen Coe “If that aint country”. Although both very good songs, I couldn’t get the message across by saying “Country is Living in the city”. I said instead, let me get back to you.

Yep, I thought long and hard about it, and the only answer I could come up with is “Country IS…. Billy Joe Shaver”. Never has an album so strongly defined the music as Billy Joe’s “Freedom’s Child”.

Billy Joe has been around for a long time, but the 63 year old shines like nobody’s business on his best album in years. I have never been so impressed with a “comeback” CD. I mean, I know and have known that Billy Joe could write a hell of a song, but this cat puts an album together of songs that will go down in history as some of his very best. Country music with an edge!!!

>From the first song “Hold on to yours”, I was completely hooked. From there on, it did not disappoint! From country blues (Magnolia Mother’s Love)… To songs of American pride (Good Ol’ USA)… Alt. Country (Deja Blues featuring Todd Snider)… Billy Joe shines through and holds the listener to every story, every song on the album.

Billy Joe Shaver is by far one of the best songwriters and entertainers today. I could go on for a long time about every song on the album, but I think I should let the music do the talking. GET FREEDOM’S CHILD… You won’t be sorry. I can’t say enough good things here except to say… Perfect in every aspect. My highest rating goes to Billy Joe Shaver for “Freedom’s Child”. Enjoy.

The Texas Outlaws Compilation
Texas Outlaws – Various Artists

A collection of Texas biggest, newest, and best!

Here we have a broad range of Texas singers and songwriters that span the years and hold the outlaw status very dear. From Pat Green and his take on the Joe Ely song “Me and Billy The Kid” to Willie Nelson rapping with Texas’ own hip hop star Lil’ Black.

The true outlaw movement was in the 1970’s and there are a multitude of performers making the modern outlaw movement shake as well, and Both are present here.

Roger Creager dares to attempt Steve Earle’s “Guitar Town”, and although not as good as the original, Creager somehow pulled it off. Along with a rockin’ version of Waylon’s “Only Daddy that’ll Walk the Line” by Jack Ingram, the mood is set for gun fighting and rebel rousing.

There are 8 previously unreleased tracks here including Ingram. From Robert Earl Keen (Whenever Kindness Fails), to Billy Joe Shaver’s live version of “Georgia on a Fast Train” and everything in between.

New meets old in a way that is pleasing to the senses. These are not necessarily the best versions of the songs ever recorded, but the old ones get a fresh new sound done by some youngsters in the genre as well. Did I mention that Willie “raps”??

Some highlights of this disc include Townes Van Zandt’s live version of his “Pancho and Lefty”, Cory Morrow’s “The Preacher” which stays true to the outlaw sound as anybody. Also Owen Tempe’s rendition of “Lost Highway”, Max Stalling’s haunting rendition of the Marty Robbins classic “El Paso”, Ray Wylie Hubbard’s “Dust On The Chase” to Reckless Kelly easing through “Rodeo Man”, to Kevin Fowler’s re-working of “I’m The Only Hell (Momma Ever Raised)”. This disc sails through with not a bump o the trail.

If you loved “Outlaw” music in the past , you’ll love the next generation, if you aren’t sure… well, pick up the “Texas Outlaw” collection from Compadre. All in all this mixture does what it was intended for, It has FUN! Oh , by the way, did I mention Willie Nelson “raps” with Lil’ Black on the new millenniums version of “On The Road Again” entitled “Back On The Road”.

The disc is worth the money just to have all the “stars” on one compilation doing songs from Marty Robbins to Johnny Cash to Jimmie Rodgers. Pure and simple Texas fun from the little label that can … Compadre.

Billy Ray Reynolds – Whole lot Of Memories

I was plain excited when I heard of a solo album by veteran songwriter Billy Ray Reynolds. Billy Ray was not only a songwriter, he also was a member of Waylon’s legendary “Outlaw Band” as a harmony vocalist and guitar player. Reynolds has written a plethora of songs over the years for country greats such as Johnny Cash, Tanya Tucker, Waylon Jennings, John Conlee, and many, many more.

To say I was excited would be an understatement, then finally the day came when “Whole lot Of Memories” comes across my desk. The wait is finally over, I thought.

Many people over the years have been waiting for a debut album by Billy Ray, none of us thought we would have to wait until he was about 60. Your question to me, I know because I have had it asked to me already… Was it worth the wait? Well in one word, Yes.

I will start off by saying this, it is not the album I thought it would be, but maybe he would have put out a better one in the 1970s.. Probably not, experience is on his side with this album. The problem is that there are times when Billy Ray sounds tired on this record. Times he doesn’t care to be there.

Alright that out of the way, for the most part Billy Ray sounds good. He has some soulful songs, old cowboy songs, love songs, you name it Reynolds has done it in the past and continues to do so in the present. His delivery is sometimes very soulful when he puts his emotions in it.

I am not by any means saying the album isn’t good, it is, it just occasionally falls a bit flat. I am still excited about this project and am looking forward to more from Billy Ray in the future. Some of the highlights here are “Two Step Me” with Merle Haggard, “She’s Cleaning the House” (which adds “and some of the trash is me”), “Atlanta’s Burning Down” one of his most recognized tunes of course recorded by Dickie Betts (the title of his third solo album), and “Saratoga”.

Reynolds also has a little help from some of his friends from Reggie Young (guitar) to Dan Dugmore (steel guitar) and featured vocals on “Number One Thrill” by the legendary Bonnie Bramlett.

As a total package this album is well crafted, and for the most part very easy to listen to. I just wanted to hear the more powerful vocals I know Billy Ray possesses. It doesn’t get my highest rating, but it does get my recommendation.

John Arthur Martinez - Stand Your Ground

Bringing Texas home……

John Arthur Martinez has a solid sound that is pure Texas! I don’t know if that’s a good thing for everyone, but I for one sure enjoy his style. John Arthur opens “Stand Your Ground” with a tune familiar to fans of USA network’s “Nashville Star”- “The Man Who Holds The Bow”. I enjoyed the version on the CD more than his performance on the show. Is that a good thing, I think so.

John Arthur is a superb songwriter as well, and partners with some great writers (Mike Blakely, Kent Finlay, Jerry Harkins, Anders Rasmussen to name but a few). He writes in a style that definitely suit his vocals, and brilliantly. This CD ranges from the tender love songs, “Everything I never knew I wanted”, uplifting songs, “Stand Your Ground”, up-tempo numbers, “Wild”, reminiscent songs “Spinning our Wheels” (one of my favorites), Texas swing, to pure fun ditties like “The Armadillo Song” and “Pool Hall”.

There is a little something here for everyone. Marble Falls (as well as the rest of Texas) should be darn proud of John Arthur. A good disc, well produced by Grammy winner Phil Mezzetti (who has worked with Asleep at the wheel, and The Texas Tornados).

The bottom line here is I like the John Arthur I hear here on “Stand Your Ground” a bit more than the “snippets” we got to hear on “Nashville Star” each week. John Arthur has a future in this business. For those who (I know it is tempting at times) want to compare John Arthur to other singers , I am here to set the record straight- John Arthur sounds like John Arthur Martinez.

John Arthur is proud of his roots, you can hear it in his music, and he should be applauded for it as well. After listening (again and again) I hear a future in Country Music! The Texas style has a strong following, and National television exposure can’t hurt either. One thing, keep listening after the last song for a fun hidden track.

Townes Van Zandt 1944-1997

Townes Van Zandt – In The Beginning

The lost songs of Townes Van Zandt are brought back to life on Compadre records. All ten songs were recorded in 1966, before his legendary LP “For The Sake Of The Song”. They were done as demos and recently uncovered once again.

The magician of emotions shines on this CD. His songs have been recorded by Giants in the music industry. At one time Townes was a hippie… Yes, a hippie, and it shows on these demos. A compilation of songs from a 22 year old hopeful to make it in this business. The songs here would hold up to any contemporary folk singer, including Bob Dylan, anyone with the last name Guthrie, Just anyone.

Townes had a way of embracing the darker side of life with a pleasant playful ease. There are some standouts on this disc, but it is all worth hearing for anybody that loves good music!

A songwriting wizard shines here. I thought there would be a lot more limitations to the disc as we so many times hear on “Lost Classics”. They do not show themselves here as you can hear Van Zandts voice crisp and clear, and you can almost hear his fingers sliding up and down the frets of his guitar.

>From the opening up tempo blues of “Black Widow Blues” on to the almost ballad of “Waiting For The Day” and closing with the very folk “Black Crow Blues”, This is a must have for fans of Townes, fans of Blues, fans of country, simply fans of good music.

You can hear on this disc where Townes was heading, Thank you Compadre records, TVZ records, Townes Family and Jack Clement for finding these “classics” and bringing them to our ears.

”In The Beginning” is a great find and I’m sure Van Zandt would be happy to hear the sound quality of his “lost” material. Listen for it on your radio as it is climbing up the Americana (http://www.americanamusic.org) charts.
