If there was ever, and if it were there remember "Ignorance is the Enemy", that Rodney Crowell were not one of the true and most honest songwriters in American music, the listener must have missed "Fates Right Hand" and has not yet had the pleasure of listening to "The Outsider". "The Outsider" is the latest in the musical catalog of Rodney Crowell, and my friends this is one that if you don't already have, you must get your copy and experience this true National Treasure for yourself.

Actually surpassing any of his previous work, and for once and always showing  to the music world that the soul of his music is in the song. Rodney Crowell delivers his music to the listener and your ears perk up as soon as the music is delivered. Rodney Crowell is a true Americana music maker, blending as always his touch of Country mixed with Roots Rock, add in a bit of Celtic overtones and you have come to discover "The Outsider". 

Rodney Crowell shows his mastery on each track. The Lyrics on "The Outsider" are not only current and socially relevant, they are also true to the core from a wordsmith that may have been overlooked in the past as one of the great American songwriters, at least by some. This time around Rodney Crowell does the writing, with one exception, the duet with Emmylou Harris on the Bob Dylan penned "Shelter From The Storm" is haunting, and maybe more relevant in the world today than when it was first written and recorded. Adding a nod to Dylan is almost poetic when you listen to this CD, on "The Outsider", Rodney Crowell takes his place (and deservedly so) among the greats like Dylan, Guthrie, Willie Nelson, Kristofferson and select others as being a true inspirational and poignant songwriter of the American heart.

To miss out on the music and lyrical design from Rodney Crowell may be one of the biggest musical mistakes of the year. It doesn't matter whether you are a rock music, country, folk, pop or any other music enthusiast, "The Outsider" speaks to the core of the soul and is sure to be one of the most remembered albums of the year. There isn't much more to say on this topic, except that tracks like "Say You Love Me", "The Obscenity Prayer", "Beautiful Despair", and "Don't Get Me Started" will be heard on the braver radio stations, and more and more home stereo's as the year progresses and the word spreads. Near perfection, Thank you Mr. Crowell for the flashlight look into your soul, much appreciated!
