Survivor - Ultimate Survivor

One of the bands that helped forge the hard rock radio friendly sound of the 1980s, as well as being remembered for the power ballads. When you look at back at some of the most memorable 80s Music, you cannot make a list that would be complete without adding Survivor if for no other reason than the smash theme from Rocky fame "Eye Of The Tiger". Over the course of the 1980s, Survivor remained one of the more successful bands of the era. Ultimate Survivor begins to show you the reason behind the mega success they held.

I remember survivor, I was an impressionable youth at the time of their debut, and they did make one hell of an impression. I can't help but think as good as the band is, would they have achieved their accomplishments if not for the impact the Rocky movie series held. I know, Survivor were a good band prior to "Eye Of The Tiger", but that did add some major momentum the band needed at that early part of their musical journey. Survivor, founded by Jim Peterik and Frankie Sullivan, made a tremendous splash that solidified their groove in the 80s scene.

You do get a good peppering of the sound that made Survivor famous, and this is a good salute to a band that should have remained a staple in the 90s. From 1979 to 1988, Survivor recorded 7 complete studio albums, all the albums held firm the bands sound, they rarely deviated from the sound that made them. Some would say that in itself contributed to the demise of the luminescent power band. The truth of the matter is Survivor had many tracks on the 7 albums that didn't make it on the radio or in the charts that may have shined through and changed the fate of Survivor.

Some of the greatest tracks of the infamous decade in music history that are included here are some of the best of the time. The stellar, inspired really,  "Man Against The World", the make-out feeling of "The Search Is Over", and some of their more rockin' numbers like "Desperate Dreams" and "Poor Man's Son" all equally show the band for what they were. Survivor may not fit on any of today's Modern music radio stations, but they will remain a solid contributor to any classic rock format. I dig this CD, the memories are strong and truly enjoyable. Survivor lyrics are more mature and meaningful than some of the bands of the time, and I feel Survivor should rank as high in the memory banks as REO Speedwagon or Journey.
