Memphis, Tennessee's Susie Salley has been a performing songwriter playing for regional audience for seven years. Her songs have a personal quality to them that tare easy to relate too. Her sound offers a variety of styles such as country, rock, traditional country, basically Americana. 

The first song from Break Free “I Don’t Think About It” is a fast paced song that offers a rock sound with a country voice. The song has a good message, don't think about things that cause frustration and to just go on. It is better not letting someone get the best of you or putting up with the troubles of a situation. The lyrics that Susie Salley sings are very introspective such as “Sometimes I think you’re hard as a block/ Nothing you do is ever much of a shock/ Keep it up, you’re bound to lose/ Pretending to be blind, but I see a lot/ I refuse to feel sorry for you/ I’m staying clear of your kind.” 

The second song, “Delta Land”, has a bluegrass country sound. The lyrics reflect Susie Salley’s southern roots, while the title track "Break Free” contains a strong guitar sound that has a good solo and riff. The lyrics reflect real life experiences especially when Salley sings “So trash all that baggage/ Pry lose from all those chains/ Run girl like wildfire/ Break free/ Yes it’s time to break free/ It’s your life/ Live it true.” The fourth song, “What She Needs”, has a relaxed beginning. This song is very personal and has a style all its own, expressing a Western lifestyle. When I listened to this song, I thought of an image of an old western movie like “How The West Was Won”. This is a song one can kick back too and not have any worries. 

“Somebody’s Baby” has a more classic country style, with a slower beat and pace. This song comes across as more depressing than the others. The outlook is more positive at the end, Salley offers a glimpse into another life with “She’s living a life of hellish leisure/ She knows she’s somebody’s baby/ I’m sure she was her daddy’s little girl/ She looks like she once was a real fine lady/ And I wonder what happened to her world". Though Salley also states what many are frustrated with “Ask a politician for some answers/ They’ll just turn and walk away.” I know I have felt this way when it comes to important issues. When you want answers, it is difficult to get them at times. 

“All Over Again” begins fast with a violin and banjo in the background adding flavor to the song. Susie Salley reflects upon the love of her children and motherhood in this song when she sings “Yes I’ll do it all over again/ To see those toothless grins, I’ll hold my babies tight/ If need be all night”. “Outer Limit Zone” is a song about testing the limits when enough is enough with an almost surf sound. I felt like I needed to be at the beach when listening to this music. It is fast paced with Salley’s country voice hitting home with her lyrics and voice. Many can relate to this song after going through a breakup and growing tired of all that went wrong. 

Susie Salley’s album is a very strong compilation of a variety of music helming from her southern origin. I highly recommend this album for a detour that is out there and those wanting something unique and inspiring to listen to.
