The Mid-West may not be the first place you search for quality Hip-Hop Music, but those who know the scene know it well and are always loyal to their boyz! That brings us to this disk presented by Top City Entertainment T.O.P. Boyz "Necessary Roughness" . This is a work of more than one of the Mid-West's best exports , featuring Big Rome, Logic, D-Mac, SK Heated, and June Bugg. This is a rap / Hip-Hop treat that gives it's love to the old school with the 18 Track CD.

So, is it different. well this CD gives you all the usual elements including the pounding back of 40s, smokin' left handed cigarettes, pimpin', and the usual barrage of 4 letter vernacular thrown in to make Necessary Roughness sound like most of the other rap CDs as far as the lyrical content. The beats are fresh and the MCing is as good as anything else in mainstream hip-hop and I guess that is my small problem with the CD, although good, it doesn't have what it takes to stand out from the pack completely and that is a drawback. Executed well but not a true original.

Others that are featured on this virtual who's who include Arrika Reeder, Unique, D.O.P.E., and Mr. Stinky. The other problem I find is I have searched the net and I can't find this CD for sale anywhere so it makes it difficult for fans to find the music. Leaving my two complaints aside, this is a good CD filled with some good vibes and the execution is virtually flawless. There are a few tracks here that really shine and do etch themselves into your memory bank.

On Necessary Roughness , the T.O.P. Boyz deliver a CD that more often plays it safe than trying to forge new horizons. The songs that do stand far above the rest are "Easy", "Summertime" and "Fast Lanes". So, what's the bottom line? This is a good enough Hip-Hop CD, it lacks some originality, but can stand it's grounds with most others.
