The Very Best of Emmylou Harris Highways & Heartaches

This was a task that I am not envious of. Take a career of a superstar like Emmylou Harris, then pick 20 songs from her career and make a so-called career spanning portrait of her musical life. The task would be near impossible, all Emmylou fans may be wondering and saying why isn't my favorite song included? With songs like "Today I Started Loving You Again", "White Line", "In My Dreams", "If I Needed You" (With Don Williams), "To Daddy", "Sweet Dreams" and even her gospel classic rendition of "Angel Band" not making the list it's easy to see that we may have deserved a box set of this incredible talent, but look at it another way, if you had to pick 20 tracks, which would you choose, keeping in mind you can't please everyone. I think with the task at hand the new Rhino CD is a good look back, and yes, we all wish there was more. 

Probably one of the most recognizable voice in country music, Emmylou Harris shines on all 20 tracks. Emmylou has a unique approach to anything she records. From her gentle rendition of Townes Van Zandt's classic "Pancho and Lefty", her classic country version of the Louvin Brothers "If I Could Only Win Your Love", or her rockin' version of Delbert McClinton's "Two More Bottles of Wine", Emmylou Harris has never recorded anything that was mediocre, her uncanny ability of making any song her own, completely claiming ownership of any cut she records.

From being one of the first ladies of the country-rock genre, to her deep roots in folk, and her presentation of straight forward country music has won her legions of fans worldwide. Teaming up with Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton for the Trio sessions ("To Know Him Is To Love Him") was a truly inspired decision, and teaming with Linda Ronstadt alone on the folk offering "Western Wall" album, are just a couple of the amazing decisions made. Emmylou Harris has an incredible voice for singing solo, she can also add her voice as harmony to nearly any oither she teamed with.

In short, Emmylou Harris has won more than just a few Grammy awards for Country and Folk music. Harris has teamed up for some incredible duets, or vocal events like Graham Parsons ("Love Hurts"), Roy Orbison ("That Loving You Feeling Again") and the earlier mentioned Trio. Emmylou Harris is as important an icon in American music as anyone. Her passion and charm are evident from her earliest recordings. Emmylou fans may have all the albums already, and there is only one new track here "The Connection", but it is still a wonderful compilation, and now you won't have to make your own "greatest hits" collection, it's right here. If you are not completely familiar with Emmylou Harris, Heartaches and Highways is as good a collection as any to cut your teeth on this amazing talent.
