Where to Sell Your Indie Music CDs Online

One of the questions I get asked more and more often is how to sell your music online and where you can do it. Well, let's take a look at what you need to do, and where you need to go in order to get the most out of your online music marketing experience.

Read down through, and it is my aim to give you many links etcetera to get your music flying off online retailers virtual shelves. 

Part 1: Promote yourself. Yes, it is true that you can sell some of your music just by throwing it in a store, someone may find it and then they may decide to buy it, but how will they know where to go?? Well. my suggestion is when you choose to market your music CD at a number (recommended) of music retailers you should NOT be selling the CD from your own website. A couple reasons for this, if you are looking to sell a lot of music, link to the retailers that you have chosen to sell your CDs. Let them do the work for you. In this way you do NOT have to worry about being on the road and coming back to 20 or 30 orders, no, you may not sell that many, but what did you set your music up in online shops for if you are trying to stop people from buying it there by offering a lower price on your own site? If you want to sell your music, then do it, but don't try and undercut the service you choose to sell your music, you're not helping yourself by doing this. Sure you can sell music on your site, but you may want to consider selling your music at the same price the store(s) of your choice have it for sale. When you are at shows, then you can offer your CD to the public for a reduced rate, make sense?

How much should I charge for my CD?

It is really simple, if you offer your CD for sale at 4 locations, try and make the CD price similarly in all the stores. Know what you want to make from each sale, and price your CD accordingly (there are different policies with different music outlets, I will list some of the pricing for some of the retailers below). Put links to ALL of the locations on the web your CD is being sold, don't pay closer attention to one site than another, give them all the same respect because you will get sales from all the sites, possibly, just by having their visitors "browsing" and you don't want to slight anyone that is trying to help you out. 

Sell your Music Online - Market your product

Part 2: Market your CD. This isn't just simply getting it ready to sell, this also means you may want to get a PR Company to spread the news about your music, and they can contact the sites and publications that will review or write about your music on your behalf. Yes, it can get a little pricey at times, but remember it is your future you are investing in. You want as many people (potential fans) as you can get to know about your music, you want them to know who you are if you happen to play in their area, so get the word out BEFORE you arrive in a city or town for a gig. Many artists and bands, yes even independent and unsigned artists will use Street Teams to get their message across, and news about their gigs.

Selling your CD, The Cover is your best advertising tool

Part 3: Your album cover. It may seem like a menial task to you, or maybe even something you really don't have to worry about, but, the best advertising you have for your CD is the cover. Will the CD cover you choose help someone buy your CD on impulse alone? Say they haven't heard of you, is the CD Cover art on your CD eye catching and memorable? Will potential fans become interested simply by seeing your CD Cover? Does your CD Cover art actually truly depict the music you have inside? keep reading for what I am talking about, and you will see that a simple band photo is not always enough.

If you are a Hardcore punk band, your lyrics are gritty and dirty, and sometimes shocking, do you think your project would be best described by a picture of a perfectly harmless puppy on the cover? NO, On the same note you wouldn't want to be standing in the street screaming on a Country CD cover, that is the first thing, but the way your cover looks is something you have to keep in mind. A simple picture of you with a bit of text isn't too appealing, beef it up a bit, get a graphic artist to create something for you, make sure it all fits with what you want people to think of you and your band. 

Remember, Metallica did NOT use the simple black cover of the legendary "Black Album" for their first cover before anyone knew who they were. On the same note, neither would the Beatles have chosen "The White Album" as a cover if folks didn't know who they were. Even Dwight Yoakam on the country side of the coin, probably no one would have looked twice at his CD DwightYoakamAcoustic.net with a simple white sticker on the front if they didn't already know who he was, they wouldn't have given it a second look, be honest now, would you have? Farther down the page I will later throw on some of the best and most effective CD Covers in recent years, for now this is just an information page.

Part 4:

Where to sell your music

. 

CDBaby.com: Probably the most well known INDIE only music store on the web, they have done very well for a number of artists and I highly recommend visiting CDBaby and checking out all of their services. CDBaby does charge a one time setup fee, and they take a mere four dollars from any product sold. You get your own page, music clips, and more. One thing  CDBaby will do for you is supply you with a bar-code for your CD for an extra charge, and they also offer Digital Distribution and music web hosting at HostBaby.

 Amazon.com Advantage Program Probably the biggest retailer online, at the very least the most well known, and they will also sell your music for you. Bear in mind that in order to sell your music on  Amazon.com Advantage Program, you must have a bar code for your CD, they cannot or will not sell music that does not have a bar code. This is in order to keep the inventory of the music they sell. The Amazon.com Advantage Program allows you to sell your music, with some good features and some drawbacks. 

In order to sell your music with the Amazon.com Advantage Program, you must pay a 29.95 Yearly fee, and you get less than half of your retail price, 55% percent to be exact. With that being said, you do get the added exposure that being listed on arguably the world's largest vendor of Books and Music online. Weigh the pros and cons, and you decide whether you think the  Amazon.com Advantage Program is worth the cash for you.

Maybe you want to start selling your own Music Downloads from your website. It just got easier to sell your own music downloads, the 1-2-3 Music Store does all the work for you, all you have to do is tell this program what to do. Much the same as the Indie Bible, but both the Indie Bible and Galaris Music Directory will have certain listings that are unique to each publication, they are both great tools for the Don It Yourself music makers, artists, bands, and musicians.

If you do not know the companies below, I would suggest you contact an artist in your genre to be sure that they are getting paid as they should and if they would recommend the service to you.
