Willie Nelson - Countryman

10 Years, a long time to make a record, as a matter of fact longer than many artists total careers. The question is, Can Willie Nelson do Reggae?, and was the wait worth it for Countryman ? Well, there is a lot of controversy over that at the moment. Some reports call Countryman a complete lack of focus while others say Jamaica would be proud. However, Willie Nelson doesn't do real concrete Reggae, in fact it is more of Willie's great songwriting and classic guitar work with a Reggae backbeat. The thing is, this project works. 

If you are looking for spiritual enlightenment, Countryman is not the answer even though it does touch on the Spiritual plane. Willie Nelson's vocals are as smooth as ever, and the tracks all have a flair of their own. It is no real surprise to Willie Fans, and the media surrounding Willie's tour bus lifestyle (You know what I mean), that the Red Headed Stranger would try his hand at the Reggae market. To call Countryman a Reggae album is stretching the truth, but it does have a flair and odd charm that will appeal to more than just the Country music fans. The thing is I guess, don't go into this project expecting classic Willie Nelson. Countryman is just one more step in another direction from a true musical renaissance man that has never followed the trends, but has led the way on some.

From Johnny and June Carter Cash's "I'm A Worried Man" featuring Reggae's Toots Hibbert to "How Long Is Forever", "The Harder They Come" and the honest, almost witty lyrics of "One In A Row" all could become some staples in Willie Nelson live show. Take it as it is, and you will find Countryman is infectious, and actually a utter joy for the listener. Let yourself get swept away, don't play the CD with prior contempt before you give it a chance. If more artists in the world today were willing to take some of the chances that Willie Nelson has made a career out of, music would be more enjoyable across the board. Agree or not, this is one of the best cross-genre CDs I've heard in a long time. Kudos Willie, looks good on ya!

Answer to the question of years, 10 years in the making, and a musical project that Willie and the rest of the world should be absolutely satisfied with.
